IWC honours Muhammad Ali with an exclusively designed special edition limited to 250 watches. The contrasting red, black and white design highlights were inspired by the kit typically worn by the heavyweight champion in the ring. The IWC-manufactured 51111 calibre generates a seven-day power reserve.
Muhammad Ali is the most outstanding – and revered – boxer of all time: a living legend. His fight statistics are breathtaking: Olympic gold medal, three-time world champion, 56 victories, 37 of them knockouts, and just five defeats. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee IOC voted him the sportsman of the century.
His dramatic battles with Sonny Liston, George Foreman (Rumble in the Jungle, 1974) and Joe Frazier (Thrilla in Manila, 1975) wrote boxing history: the last-named of these is still regarded as one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time. An exceptional athlete with a none-too-modest, self-coined moniker – "The Greatest™" – he was adored by the fans both for his boxing style and his often provocative appearances outside the ring. For, even as a young man, Muhammad Ali had granted himself the luxury of his own opinion. "I don't have to be what you want me to be, I'm free to be what I want."
In honour of his 70th birthday, IWC Schaffhausen pays a tribute to this great champion with the exclusively designed and limited Big Pilot's Watch Edition Muhammad Ali in stainless steel (Reference 500433). The timepiece in the classic cockpit design comes with red, black and white contrasting highlights inspired by the apparel typically worn by Ali in the ring: red boxing gloves and white shorts with black stripes or vice versa. The attractive play of colours is taken up again in the strap: the outer surface is made of black alligator leather, while the lining on the inner surface is finished in extremely hardwearing red calfskin with white stitching.
Like the man for whom the watch is named, the IWC-manufactured 51111 calibre is unusually robust and has lots of staying power. It can also justly call itself "The Greatest": it is, after all, the largest automatic movement from IWC. Within no time at all, the spring-mounted rotor and Pellaton pawl winding build up a power reserve of over seven days. The reverse side of the special edition is elaborately engraved. The stainless-steel back cover bears a silhouette of the jubilant sporting idol complete with laurel wreath, a "70" to mark his birthday, and the inscription "ALI".
The Muhammad Ali special edition will be available in an edition of 250 watches and sold exclusively through the IWC Flagship Boutique in New York, other boutiques in the USA and via the Concierge Service on www.iwc.com. Together with the watch, every purchaser will receive a copy of "GOAT – Greatest of All Time", a monumental work of almost 800 pages, personally handsigned by Muhammad Ali and the US artist Jeff Koons.
A unique version in white gold (Reference 500435) is embellished with an engraving of the champion's signature. This model was not for sale and went under the hammer at auction, the proceeds going to the Muhammad Ali Center. This was in keeping with the wishes of Muhammad Ali, who for many years has championed the cause of disadvantaged children.
With XXL dimensions of 20 × 20 inches, a weight of almost 75 pounds and almost 800 pages, the Collector's Edition of "GOAT – Greatest of All Time" is a book of superlatives and a fully appropriate tribute to the greatest boxer in history. Over three thousand photographs and illustrations document the sportsman of the century's life and boxing career. A hundred essays, interviews and articles about Muhammad Ali provide a comprehensive and detailed insight into his charismatic personality. The monumental work accompanies the limited Big Pilot's Watch Edition Muhammad Ali. The books are part of a Collector's Edition consisting of nine thousand numbered copies, each signed personally by Muhammad Ali and the US artist Jeff Koons.

The 50000-calibre family represents a wide range of different movements that have one thing above all in common: their unmistakably large dimensions. They feature some of the best ideas ever to appear in an automatic movement (among them the legendary Pellaton winding system) together with a balance and Breguet spring for maximum precision. Apart from this, the IWC 50000-calibre family with its 7-day power reserve represents a giant leap forward in the history of automatic movements: 1,960 complete revolutions of the rotor wind the movement for a full 7 days.
