In the case of the Portuguese Automatic with date display, the railway track-style chapter ring, feuille hands and appliquéd Arabic numerals give the dial the classic appeal of the first Portuguese watches of the 1930s. The IWC-manufactured 51011 calibre integrates all the finest features ever to grace an automatic movement, such as the highly efficient Pellaton winding system and a seven-day power reserve.
Since its debut in 2004, the Portuguese Automatic with date display has become one of the most successful Portuguese models ever to come from Schaffhausen. The balanced design of the dial with its appliquéd Arabic numerals, railway track-style chapter ring and slender feuille hands retains the classic appeal of the legendary original Portuguese, first manufactured in the 1930s. Its spiritual roots reach all the way back to the voyages of discovery undertaken by the Portuguese seafarers. The voluminous IWC-manufactured 51011 calibre integrates all the finest features ever to grace an automatic movement, such as the highly efficient Pellaton winding system and a seven-day power reserve. Since 2010, the Portuguese Automatic’s 42.3-millimetre case has been available in warm-toned, 18-carat red gold. The appliqués on the silver-plated dial are likewise made of red gold. The steel model with its silver-plated dial (like the earlier steel versions) was fitted with rose-gold-plated hands, numerals and hour markers: luxury befitting of a watch model so much in demand. The Portuguese Automatic in 18-carat white gold and the other steel models complete the collection.

Indexless screw balance with precision-adjustment cams and Breguet spiral, seconds stopped by pulling out the crown.
Shock absorption (Incabloc), together with the spring-mounted rotor bridge, provides effective protection against vibrations and impacts of the most sensitive parts.
Large rotor for bidirectional winding, can be dismantled for servicing simply by undoing one screw and a retaining bar.
Pawl-winding wheel, which transmits the movement of the two pawls through intermediate wheels to the barrel.
Set into the rotor is a 18-carat yellow gold medallion with the IWC stamp, "Probus Scafusia."
Pellaton automatic winding via two highly efficient, bearing-mounted moving pawls, which turn the winding wheel (yellow) and build up a useful power reserve of 168 hours (seven days). When the watch has wound down this far, the movement is stopped mechanically. The energy remaining in the barrel, which would be sufficient for another 24 hours' running, is not used because this prevents the decreasing end torque in the spring from affecting the watch's accuracy.

Beside the screw Balance, there is square with a + - and arrow, what does it indicate?
It adjusts the beat of the watch to speed up or slow down the watch by a small percentage. Best done by qualified people only and with a recorder to hand to show how much adjustment has been achieved. Watch on the wrist may perform at different rate to watch face up face down crown up crown down. Consistency day after day on the wrist and adjust accordingly to get accuracy, but its not a quartz watch and therefore has it's own little variations due to what you do and how you treat a watch. Golf, tennis etc are best played without wearing such a watch as the shock impacted can impair the beat and or throw the adjustment out or at worse break a watch movement!
I am considering this watch. Certainly beautiful and with interesting mechanics. If I buy it, it will be something I will keep and use for the rest of my life. What concerns me a little bit is future service of the watch. The movement appears to be more complex and complicated than many other ones seen in for example the Aquatimer line. How much more expensive or more demanding is it to service a 7 day movement compare with the simpler ones? Thanks in advance for your answer, Ulf, Sweden
It has a small second and a power reserve and a longer and thicker main spring to enable it to last for a week and it's an automatic. Without being a watch service engineer I do not believe that makes it difficult to service nor is it likely to be something that will be requiring frequent services nor is there likely to be components needing frequent replacement. It is a watch I own for nearly a year wand I am well pleased with it. I would not classify this watch as a complicated watch in horological terminology.
this watch is pure awesome!
The 4th frame of the slide show on this page shows a silver face similar to IW500114 (bottom watch of the three pictured). However, it appears to have silver numerals. I've never seen that one...anyone know the reference?
EBRIGGLE, that watch is an older model in platinum (IW500104). I absolutely love the dial because it will look great on a black or brown strap. I just wish IWC would give us that dial with a stainless case.
i just received my 5001-13. It is gorgeous, and I love it. It is my first quality time piece. Unfortunately, the power reserve sub-dial appears to be stuck near the red line / 1 day power reserve and will not move in spite of putting 200 turns on the crown. Now I have to send it in for service, new out of the box. Very disappointing. I will look foward to receiving it back as soon as possible.
Hi I am from Singapore. Planning to purchase either IW500113 ( Budget permitting ) or IW500114/500107 or 500109.
All the stainless steel models are very beautiful and am having a hard decision to make.
Can any brothers give your expert opinion.
Thanks
Can anyone comment on Cal 51011's accuracy when fully wound? What are the rate tolerances that IWC is quoting?
I have bought a Portugese Automatic about 7 months ago and it's not quite accurate. It tends to get fast. Any particular reason ?
IWC service center in the USA sucks! I personally bought this watch from the largest official IWC dealer in SouthEast Asia in Singapore, Cortina watch, about 7 months ago. Three weeks ago white dust showed on the dial. Sent it to the USA Richemont service center and they wont fix it. They say it has been tampered with, which is totally false. I have more than a year left on the warranty, why would it be tampered with, much more cost effective to send directly to service center. Now they want me to pay for a FULL service at an outrageous price and they want to void my warranty. I am never buying an IWC watch again, and I will sell ASAP a 7 day Portuguese one that I have as well. Be careful, these guys don't honor the international warranty.
Dear Mr. Becerra,
we are very happy, that we were able to solve your problem quickly with the support of our service team. Thank you very much for your understanding.
With best wishes

Weiss jemand was die Platinum Version in der Schweiz gekostet hat?
I am very lucky to have just purchased the Portuguese 7 day with white/silver face and blue hands and strap, it is truly beautiful.. a marvel of engineering and such a simple yet tastefully elegant design - not overstated or boastful, just quietly functional and a joy to behold.
Saw a very pretty boutique edition 5001 in blue face recently in Hong Kong flagship boutique. Anyone knows the exact IWC ref no.?
Just purchased this watch, trading in a gold Submariner. It's so much more of a watch. A true masterpiece.
I own a Portuguese Chronograph with the rose gold numerals. The watch is a thing of exquisite beauty. I own three Rolex models, but my IWC was my favorite. I say “was” because after just a few months of wear (maybe 15 times total), the watch stopped worked. It sounded like a spring came loose. “No worries,” I thought. I have an extended warranty of 3 years and this is less than 1 year old. I was sure IWC would fix it in a jiffy and all would be right with the world. But to my dismay, after taking it to an authorized retailer to return to IWC for me, the retailer called me to let me know that IWC would not honor the warranty because the watch was damaged due to shock or trauma. WHAT? I am female and have only worn the watch in a business setting. My business isn't UFC fighting. It is in courtrooms and law offices. IWC wants me to pay almost $700 to repair a watch that cost $8,500 retail and is less than one year old. That’s insane. I have contacted IWC to try to resolve this. I haven’t heard back, but I hope to post an update soon about how it was all a misunderstanding and that IWC customer service came through without a hassle. The watch it beautiful. I can’t wait to wear it again.
I am looking for this model but with black strap, white inside and silver arrows and numbers. Is this kind of model exist?
Dear Ms Corbin,
we are very sorry to hear of your problem. We will contact you directly to understand more and to help you quickly.
With best wishes from Schaffhausen
I finally picked up the Portuguese Automatic this past November. I had read a lot of questions and comments about the accuracy of this watch and I'm thrilled to report that my piece has been absolutely spot on gaining only 1 second every few days. So far, I'm beyond happy with my purchase.
I started my keen interest with the Yacht Club and the Port Chronograph but finally decided on the Port Auto ref. 500109. I must say it is a magnificent piece from IWC. Every time I hold it in my hands, there is so much to discover with its exquisite beauty and marvel in the design and its in-house movement. This is a true timepiece which I will always treasure for the rest of my life. I love IWC!
After the purchase of my Port Auto, and whilst admiring the watch, I noticed that the buckle with the engraved letters IWC had one of its letters "C" not completely formed, in the sense that the bottom half of the "C" was not completely formed. From my assessment, the engraving job was slightly defective. This is just a feedback to IWC from my recent experience after my purchase of a Port Auto ref 500109. Having said this, I trust IWC will take this feedback in good faith to further strengthen its already very high standards. Thank you.
Dear zacky71,
thank you very much for your feedback it`s very much appreciated since we are always aiming for the best quality possible.
Depending on how visible it is we would suggest to show it to your local retailer to find a proper solution.
Best wishes from Schaffhausen
awesome watch - bought a year ago and it remains my favorite over my rolex(s) and breitling
I just bought a rose gold portugese automatic. I own several watches which are not as understated as this, so I was looking for something that was elegent yet bold. This watch satisfies on all acounts. It is an absolute stunner. Clean/crisp lines, sophisticated look, and not $30k like some other more " established" brands. It's beauty is a given, but its performance is top notch as well. Accurate to a fault, the portugese automatic is a supreme product that I will enjoy for a lifetime and pass down to my son.
