IWC Challenge: Fabian Cancellara

—Fabian Cancellara

Fabian Cancellara is a remarkable athlete of his generation.
Only a few riders have such an impressive list of victories. Fabian Cancellara holds a record of four World Time Trial Championships titles, is a gold medalist at the Beijing Olympic Games and has won three out of five Monuments of Cycling: Milan-Sanremo (2008), Tour of Flanders (2010) and Paris-Roubaix (2006 and 2010).

Fabian Cancellara Vitals

I’m living the dream I had when I was a kid, and that thrives me forward.

What is your greatest challenge in training?
My greatest challenge is to stick to my training plan and return home stronger and healthy.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
The Tour of Flanders, the Beijing Olympics, my 2 victories in Paris-Roubaix, the different World Championships.

How do you ensure you find adequate time for training?
I’m a professional athlete, so I have learned to plan a lot: my training, my family life, the time I’m available to sponsors and to the media. And still, there’s always room for improvement.

What is the best advice you can give to anyone competing in a sporting challenge?
Have fun while at it. Take pleasure in every moment and don’t stress on a bad day.

What drives you and makes you passionate for your sport?
My goals. I’m living my childhood dream and that thrives me forward.

Do you rehearse strategies, execution, & feelings for every competition?
Before every competition, I usually watch my previous performances to push me mentally to my goal.

Do you enjoy positive rivalries with opponents and teammates?
Yes, I do.

Do you draw lessons after every competition towards better performance?
Of course. When I make a mistake or lose a race, I pay attention to every detail that went wrong and learn from it for the next race. However, after a good performance, I usually focus on celebrating!

Do you think sport is good preparation for life?
Sport, and especially cycling, is a really good preparation for life: it teaches you how your body functions and where your limits are. It teaches you how to fight for the goals you have, how to work in a team and, in my case, how to also lead a team.
