Reto Schoch

Reto Schoch is an extreme athlete, dedicated to the sport of ultracycling. He has won the Race Across America, Tortour Switzerland, and the Race across the Alps in 2011/2012.

Reto holds a Ph.D. in Microsystems and Microelectronics from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, and has worked as a postdoctoral candidate at MIT and Stanford. Additionally, he has founded his own tech start-up, swissfluidics ag, in 2010.

What is your greatest challenge in training?
To endure one 12 hour workout every week.

What has been your greatest accomplishment to date?
Winning first place, and setting a new Rookie pace record, at the Race Across America this year – 2012.

How do you ensure you find adequate time for training?
Make a priority list.

What is the best advice you can give to anyone competing in a sporting challenge?
Every goal is achievable, if you really want it.

What drives you and makes you passionate for your sport?
The combination of physical and mental strength which is required.

Do you rehearse strategies, execution, & feelings for every competition?
No, sleep deprivation cannot be trained for.

Do you enjoy positive rivalries with opponents and teammates?
No, I do not like competing against opponents. I am challenged by the track itself.

Do you draw lessons after every competition towards better performance?
Yes, you can learn about yourself and your abilities from every new competition.

Do you think sport is good preparation for life?
Yes. Sports is a school of life and discipline, providing you with immediate and transparent results.
