The "JU-Air" special edition was designed in honour of the JU-AIR airline company, whose work is dedicated to the preservation of vintage aircraft.
The current date is indicated by a striking red triangular index, by now a typical design feature of IWC's Pilot's Watches.
For some 20 years now, an JU-52 vintage aircraft has borne the IWC logo: time, then, to create a memento specially for JU-AIR.
From the engraving on the back of the watch, we learn that the "JU-Air" is limited to 500 watches.
The tribute to JU-AIR in stainless-steel has the cockpit instrument look of a classic Pilot’s Watch. The appliqués on the rhodium-plated dial as well as the two hands of the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air” are finished with a white, luminescent coating and ensure outstanding legibility even under extremely poor visibility conditions. The central chronograph hand shows recorded times in seconds, while the small white hand in the subdial at “12 o’clock” shows the number of elapsed minutes. The watch has an integrated flyback function, which means that when the reset button is pushed the stopwatch hand returns to zero and immediately starts another timing sequence. The Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air” is fitted with the IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre. It gives the watch a power reserve of 68 hours and features a stopwatch that times minutes and seconds. IWC’s designers have modified the date window to make it look more like a cockpit instrument: with its vertically arranged numerals, it now resembles an altimeter. The current date is indicated by a red triangular index that was inspired by the signal red elements found on aircraft control panels. The back of the watch features an engraving of a Junkers JU-52, while the inscription “One out of 500” is a reference to the limited edition.
The JU-52 has remained synonymous with reliability, safety and quality workmanship to this day, just like the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition “JU-Air”, which is strictly limited to 500 watches. It features everything a modern-day pilot’s watch needs: an IWC-manufactured 89365 calibre, a chronograph with a flyback function and date window in the shape of an altimeter.
