Wang Xiaoshuai is an independent Chinese film director who graduated from the Faculty of Directing at the Beijing Film Academy in 1989. As a member of the Sixth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, he principally directs art films. His unique personal sensibility comes across in every film that he makes. He assumes the diverse perspectives of the intellectual without abandoning his respect for everyday people’s lives. He has strong views regarding the responsibilities and possibilities of cinema with respect to art and culture.

His first self-funded film in 1993, The Days (Dongchun de rizi), was recognized by the BBC as one of the 100 best films produced since the birth of cinema and was the only Chinese film to make the list. Beijing Bicycle (Shiqisui de danche), which he directed in 2000, received a Silver Bear Award at the 51st annual Berlin International Film Festival. His 2005 film Shanghai Dreams (Qinghong) won the Jury Prize at the 58th annual Cannes Film Festival. He directed In Love We Trust (Zuoyou) in 2007, which received the Silver Bear Award for best screenplay at the 58th annual Berlin International Film Festival. In February 2010, the French Ministry of Culture honored him as a chevalier of the ‘Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.’
