Beijing/Schaffhausen, 17 April 2015 – IWC Schaffhausen was back at the Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF) and demonstrated its passion for the world of film by resuming its role as official sponsor and partner of the fifth BJIFF for the third time in a row. One day after the BJIFF was officially opened, IWC invited about 250 celebrities and VIP guests from around the globe to the glamorous “For the Love of Cinema” Filmmakers Dinner. Besides IWC brand ambassador Zhou Xun, the star-studded guest list included Francis Ng, Yuan Quan, Wang Luodan, Dou Xiao, supermodel Karolina Kurkova, Ming Xi and Liu Chang. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer underlined its partnership with the festival with a limited edition watch from the Portugieser family, dedicated to the BJIFF. During the Filmmakers Dinner, Peter Chan, one of the most influential directors in Chinese film, was honoured with the IWC Filmmaker Award.
In the luxurious surroundings of the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, which has hosted nearly a thousand foreign heads of state and government officials in the past, IWC hosted its exclusive “For the Love of Cinema” Filmmakers Dinner as part of the official programme of the Beijing International Film Festival. “We are proud to act as official sponsor and partner of the prospering BJIFF for the third time,” said Goris Verburg, Managing Director IWC Schaffhausen North East Asia. “The festival is not only based at the centre of the world’s fastest-growing film market, but also it attracts strong international attention as it has become a world-class event. We are delighted to add to this success and have committed ourselves to another 3 year sponsorship until 2017.” Francis Ng, Yuan Quan, Wang Luodan, Dou Xiao, supermodel Karolina Kurkova, Ming Xi, Liu Chang and famous director Peter Ho-Sun Chan together with other local and international filmmakers walked the red carpet in the graceful imperial garden at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. The internationally renowned actress, Zhou Xun, also a member of the BJIFF jury, accompanied her acting colleagues in her role as IWC brand ambassador.
The first highlight of the private dinner “For the Love of Cinema” was the presentation of the IWC Filmmaker Award. With the aim of honouring exceptional personalities in the film industry who excel in their field, the luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen presents this prestigious prize at the film festivals of Tribeca and Dubai, and has also done so at the previous two Beijing International Film Festivals, while at the same time enjoying partnerships with the film festivals in London and Zurich. This year, Peter Ho-Sun Chan, one of the most predominant Chinese filmmakers, accepted the IWC Filmmaker Award from Dennis Lee, Managing Director of IWC China, to great applause. “Chan has become one of the most influential directors in Chinese film. He is a master of diverse film genres, whether drama, musicals, action films or historical epics, and has created his very own and characteristic style in filmmaking,” Lee said. “Since his first appearance in the world of film, he has directed numerous unforgettable movies and is the only filmmaker to have won a Hong Kong Film Award, a Taiwan Golden Horse Award and a China Golden Rooster Award for his work as director. It is a great pleasure for us to present him with yet another award.” Last year, Chinese film director Feng Xiaogang received the recognition for his exceptional achievements, and the year before, filmmaker Zhang Yimou accepted the IWC Filmmaker Award 2013.

Peter Chan also received a watch from IWC: the new Portugieser Automatic Edition “Beijing International Film Festival 2015” (Ref. IW500706) which was launched as a limited edition timepiece during the festival to celebrate the partnership, and is available exclusively from the IWC boutiques in Beijing and Shanghai. The design of the watch highlights the similarities between haute horlogerie and the world of film: both require an equally high degree of precision and attention to detail, depend on meticulous coordination and are the result of forward-thinking minds. The Portugieser Automatic Edition “Beijing International Film Festival 2015” comes in stainless steel, is limited to 50 pieces and reflects the aesthetics of the classic black-and-white movies. The silver-plated dial, black small seconds display at “9 o’clock” and black power reserve display on the opposite side of the dial at “3 o’clock” underline these sharp contrasts. The nature and form of film equipment are reflected in the watch’s pure and clean aesthetics and linear graphics. With outstanding mechanical features, including the Pellaton winding system, 7-day power reserve, and date display, this timepiece makes subtle reference to the precision equipment used in filmmaking. The 18-carat gold medallion on the rotor bears the logo of the Beijing International Film Festival, while the rotor features the engraving “BJIFF 2015 · ONE OUT OF 50”, further illustrating the exclusivity of this timepiece. Through the case back, you can see how the precise movement works, just as any classic movie masterpiece; from conception, script writing, filming and editing to a complete movie – a chain of processes in perfect synergy. As IWC Schaffhausen celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Portugieser watch family this year, the Portugieser Automatic Edition “Beijing International Film Festival 2015” is another jewel in the crown of the company’s watch collection.
Passionate music rang out as the Shaolin Kung Fu Masters appeared on stage, delivering a spectacular performance to bring the accuracy and precision of a watch movement to life. To conclude the glamorous evening, Tayu Lo took to the stage for a private concert. The Taiwanese singer and songwriter has been known as the “godfather” and legend of Chinese pop music for more than 30 years and is recognized as a major cultural icon in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. During the evening, he paid tribute to the world of movies and filmmaking by performing a variety of his most famous film songs.
