IWC Transports Guests into an Underwater World Featuring a Unique Performance from Cirque du Soleil

Date — 21 January, 2014

Geneva, 21 January 2014 – To mark the launch of the new Aquatimer collection, IWC Schaffhausen and around 800 guests from all over the world gathered at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) for a very special kind of evening. The Swiss luxury watch manufacturer transported its Friends of the Brand, including Kevin Spacey, Marc Forster, Ewan McGregor, Luís Figo, Fabian Cancellara, Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, Karolina Kurkova and Adriana Lima, to a unique setting that simulated the world both above and below the ocean surface. The highlight of the evening was a performance designed especially for IWC by Cirque du Soleil, whose artists examined the mysteries of time with musical interludes provided by former Supertramp vocalist Roger Hodgson.

“Time may be a gift, but it is a priceless one.” With these words, Hollywood star Ewan McGregor opened IWC’s “Inside the Wave” gala evening, on the occasion of the SIHH watch salon. The long-time Friend of the Brand had flown to Geneva for his role as narrator. “Time is a treasure. And as with everything we hold dear, it is a question not of how much we have, but of how we manage it.” For an enchanted evening packed with poetry, breathtaking acrobatics and dynamic dance theatre, the Hollywood star narrated a story staged by Cirque du Soleil artists. The concept, which was written especially for IWC, was about time that has been stolen and is finally rediscovered just off the Galapagos Islands.

IWC Schaffhausen feels a very close commitment to the archipelago. And the diver’s watches in the new 2014 Aquatimer collection are completely in their element in this natural paradise. “The evolution of this distinctly masculine, dynamic and professional sports watch line, with a tradition going back to 1967, continues with a wealth of innovative new features,” explained Georges Kern, CEO of IWC Schaffhausen. “As a successful company, we take our social responsibilities very seriously. We therefore decided to help preserve the unique biodiversity of species found in the Galapagos Islands. For this reason, we actively support the research work of the Charles Darwin Foundation, whose Research Station celebrates its 50th anniversary this very day.”

Dive Stop at the IWC Booth

In the afternoon, VIP guests had the opportunity to discover the incredible beauty of this natural paradise when Georges Kern showed them IWC Schaffhausen’s booth, which this year was dedicated entirely to one of the world’s greatest diving attractions. Friends of the Brand, including Hollywood stars Kevin Spacey and Ewan McGregor, FORMULA ONE drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, and football legend Luís Figo, plunged into an Aquatimer-themed world covering almost 1,000 square metres at the SIHH exhibition complex. Amid handmade hammerhead sharks and the shoals of fish projected onto the walls, top models Karolina Kurkova and Adriana Lima were given a hands-on introduction to the rugged, yet elegant timepieces that make up the new Aquatimer family. The Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Charles Darwin” (Ref. IW379503) is the first watch from IWC Schaffhausen to feature a bronze case, and was particularly well received. Star photographer Peter Lindbergh was impressed by the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 (Ref. IW358002) in titanium, which is water-resistant to 200 bar. Actor Moritz Bleibtreu, film director Marc Forster and singer Ronan Keating likewise had a chance to try out the timepiece, which has incredibly high pressure-resistance.

Entitled “Inside the Wave”, IWC’s glamorous gala evening was dedicated to the relaunch of the traditional Aquatimer family and took international visitors into a domain of underwater enchantment, bathed in atmospheric light. Around 100 journalists from all over the world lined the red carpet as celebrity guests arrived to honour IWC Schaffhausen with their presence. The staged event was an appropriate setting not only in which to celebrate IWC’s new products. It also stylishly underscored the anniversary of the Charles Darwin Research Station, the scientific institution set up on the Galapagos Islands by the Charles Darwin Foundation, with which IWC Schaffhausen has maintained a partnership since 2009.

Swen Lorenz, CEO of the Charles Darwin Foundation, took the opportunity to provide guests with an insight into the comprehensive preservation measures taken by his Foundation on the Galapagos Islands. “The world faces enormous ecological challenges,” he said. “The solutions we develop for the relatively small, self-contained natural world of the archipelago could well serve as models for the entire planet. We are very grateful to be able to count on the generous support of our long-time partner IWC Schaffhausen which continues to make substantial contributions towards the preservation of the fauna and flora of the Galapagos Islands.” Fifty years ago to the day exactly, a team on Santa Cruz embarked on a programme of scientific research into the unique biodiversity of species. Now, over 100 scientists, students and volunteers from every corner of the globe work on the archipelago, conducting research into its fragile ecosystem. With its new special editions – the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Galapagos Islands”, the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “Expedition Charles Darwin” and the Aquatimer Chronograph Edition “50 Years Science for Galapagos”IWC dedicates three singular timepieces to the Charles Darwin Foundation and will help finance its untiring work by channelling part of the proceeds from sales into the charitable organization and its Research Station.

Meanwhile, Ewan McGregor and the artists of Cirque du Soleil put on a virtuoso performance in their search for lost time. Fabian Cancellara, one of the world’s most successful racing cyclists, and Alexei Nemov, Russian ex-gymnast, four-time Olympic Gold winner and five-time world champion teamed up to assist the acrobats on the aerial silks, symbolizing their journey to the Galapagos Islands. Roger Hodgson, legendary Supertramp frontman, performed his most popular hits “Dreamer”, “Give a Little Bit” and “Breakfast in America”. The Cirque du Soleil artists and all protagonists got together for a rendition of “It’s Raining Again” and the grand finale on stage, before Georges Kern handed over to DJ Jack E from Saint-Tropez, who kept the music coming.
