Hi there,
I was wondering how much of the weight of a Portuguese Automatic would be for the case and how much for the rest...
I figured that with the data from IWC it should be possible to calculate this: WG version weighs 117 gram, SS version weighs 95. Assuming that the rest of the watch weighs the same and using the densities I found on the Net (7.7 gram/ml for SS and 15.8 gram/ml for WG, both averages) I calculated that the volume of the metal is about 2.7 ml, corresponding to 42.9 grams of WG or 20.9 grams of SS. The movement (and strap!) thus weigh approximately 74 grams.
Does this sound about right or was I right in not pursuing a career in mathematics :-)

How long did it take...
... to figure this out? I guess the result depends somewhat on the way you calculated the volume of the metal. Would be nice if someone from IWC weighted the case for you to let you know exactly...
Regards and I hope you did have some sleep last night...

was never my strong suit :)
Hi Cinq,
Your calculations are totally correct! Congrats! Too late to consider changing career?
Cheers

Thanks for all the replies! If I include checking for the densities and stuff, it took me about 20 minutes to calculate this.
I was a bit surprised by the low volume of the metal these things can be very desceiving I guess.
Oh, and for the career: I guess I'm doing fine now, working in the IT branch is great!
Kind regards,
Cinq

I just tried a weight calculator program for metals that consistently reported: 0 grams! So there's a market.
Nice work.
A great subject and interesting thoughts!
Quite a lot of metal and weight in the movement, crystal, strap and deployant clasp.
