The fellow across the street from me owns a local auction gallery. Friday I heard a roar outside and saw him drive up in this gorgeous red Ferrari. It seems his gallery was auctioning the car Saturday and he had brought it home to clean it up for the auction. Like any middle aged male (OK, so I'm really an old male) I was mesmerized and had to go out for a closer look. I didn't have a camera with me, but this internet photo gives you an idea of what I saw.
Dave started telling me about the car, which was a 1986 with only 25,000 miles. He mentioned the auction reserve, which seemed fairly reasonable. I glanced at my wrist, where another beautiful machine with some Italian linkage sat quietly doing its thing. The likely selling prices of the watch and the car were reasonably close!
I have to admit, no one except other collectors has ever noticed any of my watches. But who wouldn't notice the car!
I started thinking. Visions of me driving around in the babe magnet danced in my head. Sure, it's a two seater and I could only handle one babe at a time. But girls, don't fight, I have time for all of you.
So what are you going to do, Dickie? The watch or the car? The watch or the car?
"Dickie - stop fooling around and mow the lawn already!" Ah yes, nothing like the shout of a wife to restore reality. If the thought of $500 oil changes was a reality check, the likely cost of a divorce was even more so.
Mid life crisis over, reality returned. The answer was obvious. After all, what's better than an IWC?

Well, the choice for me would be easy: I'm not into cars, I don't even drive one. But one of my colleagues knows about my watches, and knows about their cost. So sometimes he teases me in front of others by telling that I have a small Suzuki on my wrist. Sure, one of them comes close, but I wear my Portuguese Perpetual Calendar only once a week, mostly on Monday.
Watches are really cheap when compared to Ferrari's, as you already indicated: service, babes, divorce. Before you know it you can't even afford a decent watch!

Well the obvious answer is that it is not an either /or proposition. If you like cars and you like watches you have to set youir priorities and get both. Nevertheless, that particular Ferrsri would probably cost as much to maintain as to buy. LOL

Very well put. You speak for many of us who have faced -- and overcome -- the infamous midlife crisis. Moreover, you speak, I think, for all of us with significant others who say, "You've already got your silly watches. Aren't they enough?"

Steve
Strange!!!!......I always thought your Second car was a Ferrari
On balance I agree .....the PISA is far more impressive and buying a Ferrari is much easier to do
Best wishes

Nonetheless, well done in ultimately preferring the Swiss machine ...
