Good morning all.
I currently own one IWC; the pride and joy of my watch collection. I own the Spitfire Mark XVI on brown alligator strap. It is great with nonblack suits and can even be dressed down with jeans.
I have been looking to purchase the Pilot Mark XVI on black alligator strap for some time. I know I should just go ahead and get it but I wanted to get some opinions from this experienced group. I already know the answer but I'll ask anyway: are the two too similar to own both? I like the simple classiness of the watch but they are essentially the same on first glance. Upon a deeper look, they are more different as the Spitfire has texture on the face and raised numerals and they are worn with different suits. But, should I be looking for something more dissimilar to what I already own?
To be honest, I think I'm just looking for justification on a new purchase but any thoughts would be welcome.

Mate, it's obvious from this statement you've been longing to own one for a while. If this isn't the best justification to get one, I don't know what is. If you're still unsure, ask yourself this:
1. Will buying something else diminish your desire to own this?
2. Will buying this make you like your Spitfire less?

You are correct, JL, and your point is well made. The answer to both of your questions is no. My only reservation is the sheer similarity between the two, even though I realize they are different pieces with different characteristics.
I'm going to ask another question of the forum: how many IWC's do you own and are they even remotely similar or are they vastly different pieces?

I own four IWC watches and they are each from a different IWC "family." However, that was my intent and was how I wanted to build my IWC collection. I also chose watches that would give me different options in a daily rotation...dress, sport, gold, etc. Having said that...I am completely open to purchase any IWC that "speaks to me!" I think that is a perfectly good way to make a choice!
Best regards, Jim

beeg612,
I think you'll go for the Pilot Mark XVI, because it looks as if you already decided to do so, but you asked for advice and my recomendation is to move to a new family. Maybe Ingenieur mission earth or aquatimer AT2000 will work.
The good think of IWC is that we have so many models in different families.

I agree with the above comments, if it speaks to you...
Just to share my point of view, What I consider first in a watch is the movement, IWC has a great tradition in pilot's watches, for example, a Mark XII with a nice JLC movement retakes the line of the most classic pilot watch, so you'd have 2 very different pilot watches, different not just by the dial. Or else, in the contemporary line I would consider a chrono or a UTC (same base but with a module addition), both faithful to the nobler pilot's watch tradition.

Thank you all for the thoughts. You were all correct. I made the Pilot Mark XVI purchase yesterday evening. I knew I would be unable to rest until I had one. My local AD had none in stock so it had to be ordered and will take a week or so to arrive. I hate the waiting!
I do want to branch out into other families of IWC and I'm certain I will, hopefully in the not to distant future. Unfortunately, the two highest on my list are simply out of my price range; the Portuguese Perpetual Calendar and the Vintage Portofino Hand-Wound.
Thank you, again, for the advice. I've been an IWC owner for some time now but just recently joined the forum. It's now a daily stop for me.

Just my thought :)
