Im considering purchasing the Big Pilot watch and would appreciate any owners that could advise me as to how often the watch needs servicing under normal usage conditions, and how much it costs as i have heard horror stories of running costs!

Hi there and welcome to the Forum!
The BP is a great watch, I wear mine very often!
As for service interval and costs: in general, IWC advises to have a watch serviced every 4 or 5 years. There are many that don't have a watch serviced until it starts to behave weird (run fast or slow, maybe occasionally stop). In general, the costs of a full service are about 10% of the listprice of a watch. This is not counting possibly more expensive repairs.
As for straps: it largely depends on how you treat them. If you wear them with a folding clasp, they don't wear down as quickly. Hot and humid conditions cal ruin a strap in less than a year too.

I hope this helps a bit.
Kind regards,
