There is a first time for about everything. At work I am known by some as the watch man, by some even as the IWC man. I feel modest about it, but sometimes I think that in a country of the blind the one eyed man is king.
A lady colleague of mine asked me if I could give a presentation about watches, for a ladies club she belongs to. About twenty ladies, aged forty to fifty, at the home of one of them. I thought about it shortly, asked what they wanted to know about watches. "Everything", was the answer. I made a short list of topics I could present, not at all technical, making clear that all the aspects would be illustrated by pictures of all kinds of high-end watches. She said that they would love it. 30 minutes + questions, talk, wine: an agreeable evening. And please, could I show some of my own watches?
I accepted. Of course, IWC will be well represented, I feel challenged to show that some models are very fashionable for women, because, and not despite their size. I have plenty of time to prepare, the presentation will be in January, making me happy to know that the days between Christmas and New Year will be well spent. Of course, the presentation could be used again, and again...
Did any of you do such a thing already?

Never done such a presentation before, but it sure sounds like a lot of fun to be had. Actually, it sounds very exciting! It will be equally challenging trying to understand the audience and then adapt the flow of the presentation accordingly. The good news is that there is ample material to chose from.
Here is a tough question: will you allow the guests to try some of the samples present? I would personally be very nervous, but was curious if others felt the same.

Hi Paul,
It is an interesting event.
I helped my 7 years old boy to prepare a presentation on watch for his science project at school last year. It was very interesting to us. We picked "How does an mechanical watch work" as our topic. We did search around in the internet. We found an 3 minutes animation that can clearly show how the watch mechanism work in an very simple manner. The link is below:-

I gave a short presentation to a group of friends (about 8 of them) who were interested in knowing more about IWC...but I don't think it was in the same league of what is being requested of you. This sounds like a fun and interesting opportunity, Paul. I have not a doubt that all of the women who attend will come away with some new knowledge and more appreciation of IWC watches!
Best regards, Jim

Hi Paul, I didn't have the pleasure of giving a presentation myself, but attended quit a few. My son (who looks eagerly at my iwc's) has done a few himself at high school, but your audience is more appealing...(LOL)

Hi Paul,
Based on my very limited experience with women (actually based on being married to the same woman for 29 years), I would say a majority of women really appreciate watches, but not from a mechanical perspective, but from a fashion accessory. In other words...does it match my earrings, rings, bracelets, does it have diamonds, do I really have to wind it? And of course, either I can't read it (too small) or I can read it easily (big enough).
Watch Time magazine used to put out a magazine for women, maybe 3-4 issues that really focused on the high end brands offerings.
I agree that the 3714, especially with the diamond bezel will be interesting to them. I recommend doing some research and present pictures of celebrities wearing their watches. There are lots of them out there on the web. And, of course, be prepared for the question of why do they cost so much. Remind them that there are purses/handbags that cost as much or more than our watches.

Looking for Nicky's perspective. Her collection is definitely not based on fashion or diamonds. I would be careful with generalizations on what our dear lady friends might appreciate.

Paul, Paul, Paul,
What have you got yourself into? Only saving grace I believe, is that you have some time to prepare yourself for this challenge. Now, of course, whilst you may think it's all about the content - let me assure you, it's 20% content and 80% presentation!!
So, for a start - take a leaf out of of our fellow colleagues book.....Nad, ever dressed to the T, when presenting us all (as can be seen by his last public IWC photo), or of course our esteemed moderator, MF - SPIFF in a Bow Tie (now, that is something that surely will get them ladies all impressed), and of course, not to forget our own local Nicky - complete with a modern "large" watch (an ideal home grown response/ answer to that statement/question that will come; "Yes, but ...not here in little old Holland" !
Of course, if if as the day draws closer and you begin to get cold feet I am sure that a reach out for help here on this forum, will bring 101 knights in shinning amour forward as volunteers to bail you out (you did say, 40 - 50 ladies of about 20 years of age no?).
But, on a more serious note please do take heed of Bill's feedback here too - and don't for one minute underestimate the ladies. You might just discover than some of them have considerable watch knowledge, own a few Cartiers, Rolex's and even maybe an IWC or two! Just think of the trouble you would be in, if Nicky's twin was there!
Good luck - I am sure you will enjoy not only the experience, but also the preparation work, as you put it together and do your research. All part of the hobby / passion for watches, you so enjoy.

Hi all,
Thank you very much for your encouragement and ideas. That animation is great, Felix, thank you: I'm sure others will benefit from it too.
As I see it right now I will tell about all kinds of complications, just by showing foremost pictures of them, concentrating on the big brands and watches that are interesting for women too. But there are not many Perpetual Calendars for women, here they have to bear with me. Classic models, nice Piagets with a lot of diamands; I will try to make it as diversified as possible. I like to talk about watches, I guess a good preparation and my flair when talking should do the trick.
There are lots of pictures on the web, Google images per search item is a good start. I noticed however that a lot of these pictures are very small, that is, when on screen size they get blurred. Maybe I have to try and use fora pictures, or in the end I might even mail the watch companies: who knows, some may send good pictures. Any ideas in this respect? Although only in January, I am thinking about it already, as I know that time flies: even a cheap watch could tell met that.
Kind regards, Paul

I gave several presentations about IWC. Also in connection with my work: dental implants (Ti).
Nice to give an overview in time. Also always nice to show some of the non-female-friendly adverts.
For a girl/ women I would say that the 3714 and the midsize watches are great.
Greetings, Martijn
