I have a 1937 18k yellow gold wristwatch and strap (which may be original as it certainly is unusual... not solid but large links) case number 978122 movement 940300 recently overhauled by a reputable company and keeps good time I would like to know which model this is as it is not described on the face first sold 8 feb 1937 by Perret & berthoud in Le Locle now in UK. Has been well cared for with original face and glass( i suspect) I know you dont discuss prices but an indication of value for insurance would be useful many thanks
Your watch is "known" by the type of movement it has, which is a Calibre 83, which in this instance was manufactured in 1935. You can read more about this movement by searching the archives here.
Back then, almost all IWC watches didn't have model names. The Calibre 83 was housed in various cases and with differing dials. You might find the model number of something close to it by searching the old catalogs, which I have put on the Internet at http://www.iwcforum.com/Vintage_Catalogs.html

Thank you yes it is Cal.83 12lig. Would appreciate an explanation of that if possible . I found the face on the 1935 catalogue as you suggested. I was also interested in the strap as it is unusual , is there a catalogue that covers this do you know?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/1937_iwc/ hi not very good at this but hope it works ...I would really appreciate anything on the strap , has it anything to do with IWC? Many thanks mark
Nice watch. The strap (bracelet technically, since it's metal) doesn't have anythign to do with IWC. It was an after-market bracelet fitted by a retailer. It's not a "popular" type today but is representative of an earlier era, although probably not 1937.
