During the recent get-together of IWC collectors in Hong Kong with Kurt Klaus, I noticed that he was wearing a special lapel pin. While I didn't say anything to him, I thought it looked a little large and perhaps a little dated, but entirely appropriate for him --and perhaps only him. It was a small depiction of the original Da Vinci perpetual chronograph from the 1990s. After all, that was his baby, his invention, and his initial claim to fame. He no longer wears that model, which of course is no longer produced, but instead wears the newer larger tonneau shaped Da Vinci perpetual, number 1 in platinum of course.
That pin was very noticeable to me during the dinner, and I kept thinking how it was so appropriate that one man wear it --Kurt Klaus.
After the event, we were standing outside the restaurant. Herr Klaus came up to me and said Michael, my trip now ends and I'm going home to Schaffhausen tomorrow. I don't have any more of these, but I believe Mr. Pantli said that he can find me another one. I want you to have this. He then took off his lapel pin, and gave it to me. I hadn't ever said a word about it, and was totally surprised. I was very honored, and I was at a loss for words, other than to say "thank you very much; I will wear this with great pride".
Over the past 10 years, I've received other gifts from IWC --something at a meeting, or for a birthday or the holidays. They are all special in their own way. I usually don't mention them here, since they are private. But this one gift, really of small economic value, transcends them all. It is not "just" a souvenir, but something I will always wear with pride. It is from Kurt Klaus, representing what he invented and what he wore. I am honored and humbled.

It is a great honor. If you think about creative people in general then you will conclude that Herr Klaus is one of the kindest and most humble of people. IA wonderful man.

What a treasure! A marvelous gift from a remarkable man.
That is something that you will be able to treasure forever. How honored you must be. It is amazing you were able to write this post. The gift must have left you at a loss for words for some time.

What a great and touching story and wonderful gesture from Herr Klaus. It reflects the character of the man and a tribute to you as well. Wear it with pride and in good health. I look forward to seeing it displayed proudly on your lapel when next we meet.
