Wow. I am really upset to learn that the URL LINK to all of my photos, files, movies, etc that I have posted to this forum over the last 9+ years and over 3,000 posts are now bad. Apple discontinued their ".Public" folder on their iDisk as of today - so that means that every post I have made with a URL link or Image (to my photos) will no longer display in all my posts going back to 2001.
I wonder who else on this Forum uses (or used) Apple's iDisk public folder to host their IWC forum contributions. This is a real mess - I guess Apple will not fix this either.
That is very disappointing, it was only Tuesday last week that I refered to one of your posts in the Tour. Unless Apple restore the settings I fear the links will be lost.
My internet service providers (ISP) have always provided some hosting space but when I changed IPSs the photo links were lost. The only permanent solution was to set up my own URL and pay for hosting. I can move the URL to another host without losing the links to gregsteer.net

Richard,
I truly hope your valuable contributions will not be lost to us. Many of your posts are significant contributions to the Forum and its members; and many were just plain fun(y).
Did Apple give any advance notice of their change?

Thanks for the concern.
Apple sent an email 30 days ago - warning of this discontuniation. However, I could not imagine that this woudl be a perminent issue. I honestly felt there may be temporary interruption - especially since I spend an extra $198/year for my family iDisk and .MobileMe services ON TOP of my monthly internet service, etc.
The good thing is, my files and all the content is still safe. I will need to back it up, move it to another provider, or potentially some other Apple service - however the PATH URL for all of the files will change. So I would need to go back and EDIT ALL of my previous posts.
I wish there was a way to do a global string REPLACE
replace all instances of "http:\\homepage.mac.com\membername\.Public\" with "http:\\newurl\"
and that would fix it easily.
However, I guess I could hire a "temp" employee - and use the "message edit feature" that now exists on the forum - to have this "temp employee" go back to each of my posts and paste my new URL over the old ones....

...I was just thinking of a great "software enhancement" to this forum software. Just like the member profile has a place to define a "Signature" - I wish we could define the "default path URL" for where our photos and links are stored. So, when we go to make a new post to the forum - we just click the "image icon" and type the name of the FILE - such as "Ardoise.jpg", not the entire URL.
This way, if a member's file hosting path changes later on - all we need to do is go into our profile and change the path URL to the new location.

Nice idea of the default path URL!
To avoid the same problem you are facing now, I also decided to have my own hosting just like Greg. This also has the benefit of having my own statistics.
I would really love to see you re-post some of your old stories. The one that immediately comes to mind is the very impressive report you did about the hidden message in the brushed case of the Da Vinci!
Kind regards,
Clemens
PS: my statistics also show that my pictures get re-posted by forum members here and elsewhere without asking my permission, especially in Asia. There are also a few webshops in I believe Indonesia that are directly linking to some of my BP pictures and they are responsible for a fair percentage of the traffic too! I might have to build in some filters to avoid this but I am getting off-topic here

Richard, Wow - that's a relief to hear that at least the data is safe!
Given that storage these days is real affordable, I don't understand Apple motive here. And Yes, Clemens raises an interesting issue about "external links" to your data/postings (presumably, why IWC dont offer to host the archive).
I wonder who else on this Forum uses (or used) Apple's iDisk public folder to host their IWC forum contributions. This is a real mess - I guess Apple will not fix this either.

Ardoise

Richard, is there any way to retrieve it? Anything we can do to help (like signing a petition - etc.?)
Best regards
Mark

Perhaps I'll just have to re-post some old stuff from times past - here and again, from time-to-time....
