There is no 'proper' orientation. Choose the orientation that's the most comfortable for your wrist. For my Portuguese Automatic I have the short part at 6 o clock and for my BP I have it at 12 o clock.
If you want to try what's the most comfortable without immediately changing the strap, just strap the watch on with the dial up side down (e.g. 6 o clock at the top, not the display back on top ;-) and wear it a while to feel if it suits your wrist better. If it doesn't, you wouldn't have swapped the strap position in vain.
