My father passed away 24 years ago and left me his IWC. SInce I have had it, I have purchased a black and brown lether strap with a new gold buckle from the IWC store here in Las Vegas. I am currently looking real hard at a portuguese automatic (5001-07 with a light brown strap) and decided I should order the Extract for his watch first. I learned that I have a Cal. 89, 12 lig., ref 564. The Extract says that it was sold on September 3, 1957 at Siber Hegner in Zurich.
My dad had an interesting background in the gaming business back then, both the legal and illegal side from what I understand. He was working in Cuba when this watch sold in 1957; but I don't know how he came to own it? It is in pretty good shape and keeps perfect time, but I am thinking of sending it back for cleaning and a tune-up. There are a couple of marks on the dial, some scratches on the crystal and a small dent on the back. If they want to replace the dial with a new one, will it be the same? This one has the even numbers only. Also, any idea on how much it costs for IWC to do this type of work? I will try and take a good picture of it this weekend and post it on the forum.

Tio, nice tale behind that watch, a family heirloom and certainly if you can both afford it and have the patience to wait the time out to get it back - I would send it to IWC for a restoration....

As of Friday afternoon, it is on its way home (back to IWC) for a complete restoration. I expect that it will take the better half of 2011 before it returns, but I know it will be well worth it. When it returns, I will again proudly wear it and hopefully pass it on for the next generation of my family to enjoy! And, with my wife on board, I can get the Portuguese Automatic (5001-07) I have been looking at for Christmas. I am just not sure what I will be getting her, but I know it better be good!

I will post the new 5001-07 as well as the before and after pictures of my Cal. 89 when it returns. Until then, I guess will just have to get by with my Panerai Luminor, last year's birthday present from my wife. She is a keeper!

I am not sure why, but I can no longer access this site with the user name and password I used prior to the makeover? But I am the one that started this topic last year. So I re-registered and am starting over! The reason I am posting is because I just heard back from IWC after waiting almost 3 months. Last Friday I recieved the quote for work on my 1957 cal. 89 from the IWC "Spa." (I had already ordered and recieved the extract). It is basically what I expected (I am not sure if I am allowed to post the amount here?). The dial restoration is about 1/3 of the total cost and I was told it would take about 22 weeks. That puts it out to around mid-June of this year. I am looking forward to seeing the results as it ran great but, according to M.J., looked like someone used crayons to color in the dial. Again, I have no problem posting the cost, I am just not sure that it is allowed here?

Great story, thanks for sharing. It's a great memory from your dad!
Please post photos as soon as you can, I'd love to see it.
My Cal 89 is from 1954 and is extra special because it's from the year of my birth!
Cheers,
Nad
