My contribution is rather simple; a revision of the "Father and Son Pilot Watches". As many collectors do not have sons, I feel there is an opportunity to capitalize on a collectors' desire to share their passion for IWC with their daughters. Although IWC is typically a brand that appeals to men, it is evident on this forum that women also admire the sophistication and understated magnificence an IWC timepiece provides.
Using the 30110 and 51011 calibres , these special editions of the Mark XV and BP would feature a rhodium dial with forest green hands and numerals.
The use of the rhodium dial and forest green hands in this fashion would retain the high visibility/readability collectors have come to expect from IWC Pilot's Watches and add an extended element of elegance.
I would like to comment that thus far, I found Gregg's idea the most intriguing - well done sir!

It has to be the 2012 Pilots watch. Because it should be priced well (entry level) $3-$5K US, it will be a true winner. It will be automatic (not sure what movement) 42mm with a leather strap (bracelet is available, but it's a stunner on a pilot strap). Slightly similar to the 2012 big pilot in a smaller package and small screw in crown. Guaranteed winner, no celebrity ambassador needed!

I see a lot of people are going with less expensive/higher production suggestions (given the economy, that makes sense). I would like to suggest something different. IWC Announces the Portofino Moon Phase Minute Repeater for 2011 IWC has announced that it will pay homage to two of its pocket watch workhorse movements (cal 95 and the cal 98) to produce a very special wrist watch—the Portofino Moon Phase Minute Repeater. This watch will allow the user to activate a repeater mechanism that chimes the minutes, quarter hours and hours and also will display the moon phase. This watch will feature a very special handcrafted enamel dial with sunken sub-seconds with blued steel handed and the vintage script IWC logo will adorn the watch—much like the vintage Portofino. However, the minute hand and moon phase will placed vertically as compared to its predecessor with a horizontally layout. The watch will be housed in a 42mm precious metal case and will have a see through back from which IWCs newly developed caliber 9598 movement will be visible. Production will be limited to 100 pieces in platinum (pictured) and available as part of the standard collection in rose gold. Portofino Moonphase Minute Repeater in Rose Gold at 85,000CHF Portofino Moonphase Minute Platimun 100 Pieces at 115,000CHF

Looking toward the 2012 update of the Pilot's watch line I would like to see a ceramic case BP with two added complications. First, I would remove the power reserve sub-dial, nice but not essential, and replace it with a sub-dial dual time zone hours/minutes function that would be set by the crown. The CFDV and DaVinci line have this dual time zone function indirectly by allowing the 12 hour chrono function to run continuously. The second complication I would like to have is an alarm function. Both of these added features will be well received by the traveling collector who crosses time zones and need a friendly reminder of meetings, etc.
Wishing everyone a very happy holiday season as we await the announcements of the redesigned Portofino lineup at SIHH 2011.

First and formost, thank you Michael for conducting this drawing and happy holidays to all! I have the same desire as a couple of other forum members about an updating of a Portofino with some added complications...but I would go in a different direction. I would like to see a Portofino moonphase watch in stainless steel that is specifically priced as an entry-level (price commensurate with...the SS Vintage Collection Ingenieur) product. The basic dial design would be the same as the Portofino 356303, but with a full color moonphase at the top of the dial, and the date window moved to the "6" position to offer a better balance. The movement (in order to keep the price down) would be an outsourced, IWC modified one such as ETA or Selita. The size of the current Portofino Automatic is 39mm and I would upgrade the size of my new Portofino to 42.5-44mm, depending on the specs. of the movement needed for the moonphase complication. The watch would also be offered with a brown or black allegator strap option. I believe this would be a best-seller because it would allow a greater pool of buyers to have an IWC moonphase watch as an entry-level option...the price-point for the new Portofino would be competative with the lower priced Mark XVI's, AT's and Portofinos. It would also maintain the Portofino heritage as a modern interpretation of the great 46mm Portofino moonphase pocketwatch and wristwatch!
Best regards, Jim

Well Cellar, here I was on reading MF's announcement of the draw. All fired up I was - I am going to get myself a prize I thought....BUT, then I see this absolutely astounding and brilliant suggestion from you, and think how can we humble lads out here, even think to submit, after such a posting?
Of course, whilst I believe it is a brilliant idea I must ask that MF immediately remove the posting, before any managers in Schaffhausen see this, and get exited. Why - simply this. That watch, coming out of IWC will be an immediate success - and immaterial of the fact it will be a 1,2 million franc watch it will sell like crazy into it's home market - and all IWC production facilities will be geared towards it, leaving very little manufacturing space for other "lessor" IWC watches, and of course zero chance that my idea for a relaunch of the " Novecento Re-Release" in a limited series of 50 platinum, 500 Rose Gold and 5000 Stainless, with only minor modifications, to make it slightly more modern watch, will see the light of day. released as part of the 2011 Portofina line.
Of course, these touches are small - like a silver guiloche dail and blued hands, blue dialed option on the platinum (like the current PPC ref.5021) and available direct to ALL sales channels.
But I shall bury my dreams, and respect the Cellar has dug deep in the basement, to come up with the next challenge for Herr Klaus. And judging by the bevy of lovely Asian ladies surrounding him on the picture within this months WATCH (arrived this morning) all of whom are no doubt eager to see Herr Klaus back in Asia on a study trip to ensure he gets the culture feel for the movement right, who am I to deny this suggestion.

Anyway, the idea is simple, a chronograph and a UTC together, the old 3717 loses the calendar (I hate calendar windows :D) and gains a cardinal balance. A very full dial for a totally technical watch.
Apart from the sub-dials disposition which could be a little difficult with the calibers IWC adopts, there wouldn't be money to spend for researches, for further know-how etc. all the elements to build the watch are already home, with benefits to the overall costs.
Finally, this watch could represent a good product for a wide target, from beginners to medially sophisticated users, passing through watch tools lovers or simply fashion victims, it would work for anybody and it would be available at an affordable price (€ 5.500 with strap - € 6500 with bracelet).

What a great contest!
OK, first of all, if I could come up with something, will IWC hire me? Probably not!
But if you want to sell a million watches (and you can name the price point) then here’s my answer.
It would be a woman’s watch.
It would change colors depending on what outfit the woman was wearing. It could go from large (casual) to small (dressy). It would have diamonds, pearls and Swarovski crystals that could be changed out very simply. It would never tell the time. Instead when asked of the time, it would say….”don’t worry, he’ll wait for you.”
When a woman looked at the watch, it would say in random sequence… “You are more beautiful than Sophia Loren at any point in her life.” “You are very special, wonderful and caring.” “You are skinnier than 20 year-old woman working in the fashion industry in Milan.” “All men are captivated by you.” And finally, “go ahead, you deserve it.”
The watch should come with an embedded Starbucks card, Sephora sale alert, map to the nearest woman’s room and a platinum AMEX card.

The Portofino Automatic. A wristwatch in leather strap and two sizes. A 44mm and 40mm case size in SS and RG too. Using the 80000 Family Cal. (44mm only) both sturdy and reliable this should enhance the current Portofino line and penetrate a new market. With a most elegant appearance and Italian origin. Priced at about CHF 7500 this would make it an ideal competitor to many rivals.
The BP Compass Uhr. The glorious past of IWC Schaffhausen once again present to this contemporary yet vintage model. Using the same case size but not the same Cal (80000 Cal again) will create the adequate space in order to construct a two face interchanging folding dial one with the current BP dial with the mechanism surrounded in reinforced inner cage in order to prevent magnetism. Underneath lies once the supremely vital tool for pilots, the compass. This watch would be priced at CHF12-15000.
The PPPC Portuguese Pallweber Perpetual Calendar The pinnacle of IWC engineering. A watch bearing a Gregorian Calendar that will not need any kind of adjustments ever, as long as kept wound. Yet again Herr Klaus' secret project will reveal the new Cal 10000 bearing a 30 days power reserve smoothly operated by the crown in a case size of 44mm exclusively available in platinum. This will also reestablish for the first time after DaVinci Digital, a digital time dial appearance paying a tribute to J.Pallweber. Priced three times higher than the Grande Complication this will make this watch a league of it's own and a platform for imitators in the watchmaking industry.
