OK, first of all, if I could come up with something, will IWC hire me? Probably not!
But if you want to sell a million watches (and you can name the price point) then here’s my answer.
It would be a woman’s watch.
It would change colors depending on what outfit the woman was wearing. It could go from large (casual) to small (dressy). It would have diamonds, pearls and Swarovski crystals that could be changed out very simply. It would never tell the time. Instead when asked of the time, it would say….”don’t worry, he’ll wait for you.”
When a woman looked at the watch, it would say in random sequence… “You are more beautiful than Sophia Loren at any point in her life.” “You are very special, wonderful and caring.” “You are skinnier than 20 year-old woman working in the fashion industry in Milan.” “All men are captivated by you.” And finally, “go ahead, you deserve it.”
The watch should come with an embedded Starbucks card, Sephora sale alert, map to the nearest woman’s room and a platinum AMEX card.

IWC proudly presents the Mk XVII
The watch is a 42 mm Pilot's watch with the calibre 80110 movement and an added UTC display. Needless to say it also has magnetic shielding. The watch is water resistant to 120 m instead of the usual 60 m.

A few years ago I was in Schaffhausen, where I met some IWC top officials over dinner. We talked about business, excellence, success, and of course about watches. We gained some common ground and after a while I was asked about the concept of a successful watch. I told them that you had to stay close to your customer base, and that once in a while you had to come up with something surprising and different. As the regular customers would have several watches of your brand already, this could entice them to buy yet another, special watch. If it was really good, then the non-regular buyers might like it too, and a new classic would be born. We talked this through, and suddenly I was asked to work out an example. One idea led to another, and a project was started. I was allowed to sound the idea out in a group of die-hard IWC lovers, and although the feed-back was not always favourable, the project was carried out and is near its end now. Of course there is a lot of secrecy around it yet, but I may tell you something. I cannot reveal all the details here of course, but I can give you some idea of what is going to be shown soon, and believe me, it will be fantastic.
2011 being Portofino year, I am proud to announce the Portofino Finestra. Finestra is Italian for window, and that is what this watch is all about: a window through which you can reach out to time. It is different, mysterious and appealing. It reaches out to the past and to the future, still its shape is a new today. It is different in that it has a special rectangular case, with a very elegant structure reminding you of an old fashioned window. For the first time in several years yellow gold is used, making the watch look a bit mild and subdued. Most IWC watches are quite big nowadays, the Finestra is meant to be a dressy watch: noticeable of course, but smaller and thinner than those watches. Elegance is the theme. The size of the case is 45 mm x 35 mm, and it is 10 mm thick. Being a dressy watch it shows only time and a small seconds hand: a real gentleman doesn't need more. To make this watch special, the 98xxx movement was modified into a rectangular shape, making it possible to put the small and classy seconds hand near the lower edge. It really is a wonderful movement that can be admired through a sapphire back. The dial is a whitish cream, at the edge around the indexes guilloched to make it work astoundingly with the case. The indexes are of yellow gold and pointed towards the centre, as if the watch grows slowly towards the edge. The hands: what else than beautiful classic yellow gold dauphine hands, making this a very chique watch indeed. This watch has a light brown alligator strap with a tang buckle: of course no deployant clasp for such a classic beauty.
I can describe this watch as much as I like, but you have to see it to instanly want it. Alas, I am not at liberty to show you a picture yet. You have to wait until January to see it, and until June to buy it. Have a good time in anticipation!
Kind regards, Paul

Just to clarify: while it sounds that you are making statements of fact, in actuality you have no inside Information leading to the watch you describe, and in fact it's just your personal fantasy and your own taste.

Ok, I'll try to follow the rules....
If we are trying to come up with a best seller then it must be reasonably priced and elicit enough sales to make it a winner. So how about an intermediate version of the Big Pilot? Let's call it a Center Pilot. It would basically be an identical looking version of the 5002 BP except about 40mm. Available in all the usual metals plus titanium and ceramic. Let's say slow beat. This watch would satisfy all those who want a Big Pilot but think its too big for their wrists. It also hedges the future just in case larger size watches start to lose some of their lustre. And even many women might find the smaller size desirable. Say, 7900 CHF.

I have given this idea a great deal of thought. I was starting to analyse the former IWC bestselling products ; the Yachtclub I, the Pilots, the Portugues chrono,... Then I mixed it with the desires I read in hundreds of posts here on the forum about possible dream watches, that to learn what would be decision making arguments to buy such a watch. Then I read the post from dzul and his idea came scarely close to mine. And yes, I would buy that watch for sure. But then, the real best selling IWC would probably be another. Some gave the idea of a womens watch. I think that they are right. Some of the reasons they say are true, some funny. But the real reason that this model would sell well is guild. Yes indeed guild. Every time I buy another IWC, I try to buy one first for my wife. So she ended up with a nice collection of different Portofino ( also ladies models ) and Da Vinci watches . But I am running out of choice. I believe if a nice ladies model would be made by IWC, a lot of collectors would buy it for their wifes. PS for IWC ; please keep the price as low as possible ...

Well, you got it, Michael, as all the rest of the forum I presume: of course I made this up, only my ideas about a nice watch are truly my ideas.

Michael, I'd like to see a Laureus Big Pilot with no contrasting sub dials. Instead of limited production open it up to 5000 pieces over time.. This allows people who love the new PPC in white gold and those who loved the BP in platinum to purchase at a more affordable price point. Benefits both the purchaser and the Foundation. Kevin
I'm laughing out loud...
Regards,
Roberto

The two most extra-ordinary IWC's have to be the Grand Complication and the Tourbillon Mystere.
So...Why not have a tourbillon with a minute repeater, encased in Portugese simplicity. A tourbillon with PP will work as well.
If one has to wear a house on one's wrist, then so be it...
Happy Holidays to all.
