Help please - I am new at watch purchasing.
I am looking at buying a preowned IWC GTS Romain Platinum Silver Dial Black Strap Auto watch at a reputable jeweler in town as a gift, but they have no papers on it. Is that a huge deal? It appears that is may be from what I am reading now. How do they prove authenticity? What are the pros/cons for not having the papers?
I think the serial number is 2480550. Can anyone tell me anything about this watch? What is a fair amount to pay?

Hi,
does it look like this one?
(this is gold version)
It's a ref. 3209 with a jlc movemen inside.
In 1991 the gold version costed 6.770.000 Italian Liras and/or 9400 Deutsche Marks, the platinum version 16200 DM.
Today its price, as for any old/vintage watch, depends on its conditions and obviously on the demand of collectors for this specific model which is not really high to my knowledge.
The fact the watch has no paper is a minus but, again, it mainly depends on the purpose you're buying the watch.
If you think of it as an investment, the lack of B&P diminishes it's value (but this watch is not for investment - imo)
If you think of it as a very nice watch and you'll enjoy wearing it, well, do you wear boxes? If the price is fair, the seller is reliable and guarantees a licit origin of the watch, why not buying it? It's a great watch, very classy and with some "substance", inside and outside.
A picture of the watch would be very helpful, maybe it's not a ref. 3209 and my digressions totally useless :)
Not having papers is common with older watches, and this one was made more than 15 years ago. You either have to know what you're doing when buying oklder watches or you have to trust your Seller: people sometimes say "buy the seller more than the watch".
Assuming the watch is authentic, there's no major con except for a dubious buyer: that is, the market for you to resell the watch in the future may be more limited (since some other buyers might want papers). I suspect not materially, but that's just my personal guess.

You might find the model, and mroe information, by searching at http://www.weeber.biz/IWC/Workbook/search.html

Thanks to the moderator, I looked it up and think it might be 3209-002 - with the platinum case and IWC spelled out.
Any idea how much it is worth? What is a fair price to pay in US dollars?
