While I was in Zurich earlier this month, there was a vintage watch fair which of course I had to attend.
I found this watch there, and a friend thought I bought it because of the 24 hour dial:
But, no -it was really the back that attracted me, even if it was over polished:
It wasn't the fact that William Tell was on the case, but because it was a "Schüzenuhr" --a marksman's watch, awarded as a prize in a Schützenfest or Markman's competition. This competition was from 1912 and held in St. Gallen-Rorschau, a canton not far from Schaffhausen (and in fact the first mayor of St. Gallen was Karl von Friedberg, also known as Karl Müller-Friedberg).
The 1912 watch adds to my collection of vintage IWC prize watches:
By the way, there was a second IWC Schuetzenuhr there but it was 500 francs higher than my self-imposed limit. In the 30 minutes itvtook for me to rationalize exceeding that ceiling, the watch was gone. I then decided to grab this one.
