Welcome, Tom, to the forum. You've got a great start to a true IWC collection. I must say, I'm kind of jealous, your living so close to watchmaking's Mecca:-) Can't wait to see a picture of your Spitfire, in my opinion, one of IWC's coolest watches. Enjoy...

Tom, what a great post. Welcome to the Collector's Forum. Having visited your lovely city several times, I am jealous that you can walk the city and take in the IWC sites at your leisure. The IWC uhren virus definitely has struck and I am certain there will be additions to your Cal 89 and Spitfire in the future.

Hello Tom, welcome from me too. I only joined up here a few days ago when my first IWC, Fliegeruhr Chronograph, arrived.
It would be marvelous to live in so close to IWC. Marvelous and frustrating :-). Like when shopping with mother in childhood. So many toys all around but so far out of reach.
Here in Perth Australia, it is similar to what MF & Alan Ross posted regarding their locations; no one really knows IWC. In Australia if people see a Rolex, they immediately think fake. That's because we are close to Indonesia and many holidaymakers pickup replica timepieces (an unfortunate truth).
To be honest, unless it somehow affects your job/career, I would not worry too much of what your peers think and wear the watch to work. That's if it pleases you and your job is not one that can cause damage to your watch.
When I speak to people who call me 'rich or crazy' for owning such watches that cost a few thousand dollars, I ask of their hobbies. You will almost certainly find the financial amount you decided to invest in your wonderful IWC, someone else has invested in an enthusiasts car, stamp collection, science fiction comic books, a home cinema etc. It is just that a watch can be more noticeable because you wear it. People don't bring their stamp collection or home cinema out in public. If you see your colleagues on a daily basis, maybe wear your IWC and when people comment, tell them how much you saved for the watch and its a hobby for you. Soon they should understand and accept that this is part of your lifestyle as much as their hobbies are part of theirs. I know a gentleman who says he cannot afford an Omega Speedmaster Moon watch which he really wants. He makes jokes that I must be super-wealthy (he knows I am not). But for some reason he has bought about five or six entry-level swiss watches around $300-$500 each. Everyone chooses to spend their own way (yes, I try to tell him if he stops buying these less expensive watches and saves for a year he would have his Speedmaster).
I hope you do post photos of your lovely Spitfire. For me it was between the Fliegeruhr vs. Spitfire Chronograph yet the black dial spoke to me most.

Hi anonymousmoose,
you're right about the "how others spend the money" thing, and I think the same way but I don't like to argue about private things with others who have better cars, TV sets or houses so I wear my IWC in private life and with pride. Thanks by the way for posting the nice pictures of your Chrono. Had they been here before, the decision would have been much more difficult. I tried both watches on through the year and in the end I decided for the Spitfire because of the all-over steel look ( I added the steel bracelet as well though I liked the look of the croc all the same but it is not very practical for me being outside in snow and rain every day ). As I use the chrono for showing a second time zone occasionally, the 12 hr dial is more detailed on the Spitfire which was another reason for my decision. Have a great New Year, we will follow a bit later then...
Regards,

Roberto
