ianwcraig Wrote:My love of watches began from an early age and one of my first memories as a child is my grandfather opening the rear case of his gold pocket watch and i could see the jewels and working parts that looked so complicated. I was given the watch after my grandfather died however the scum and low life burglar who broke into my house while i was working overseas and stole my prized possession (amongst many other things) will never know the pain they caused. (the scumbag was later killed whilst driving a stolen car in a high speed chase and being pursued by police so i took some solace from that...that is the gospel truth and i appologise if that comment offends anyone) however i digress..... My grandfathers surname was Wilson and i inherited this too (as a middle name) and my initials are IWC. I maintained an interest in fine watches and like many others, I aspired to own a rolex.. i bought my first quality watch, a rolex sea dweller when i was 21 and wore the watch almost daily. I Also own a tag, which is by far the best timekeeper of any of my watches and gaines approximately 2 seconds per month, however i was ignorant of the IWC brand untill recently as the region of England where i live have only 2 authorised retailers. I have resaerched the brand and it only seems right and fitting that i should have one and am seeking the IWC PORTUGUESE CHRONO AUTOMATIC 3714 as my chosen venture into the IWC 'brand' and would welcome any suggestions or opinions???? I do like the classic look with the brown strap and gold numers set against the white face.. I recently had a full new strap, bezel, chrystal and entire refurb carried out on my rolex, the watch is no longer in production and the refurb cost more than the original purchase price, evidencing that a quality watch remains a sound investment, but agree whole-heartedly that they should be worn rather than kept locked away.. any advice would be greatly appreciated..
IANWCRAIG,
Hello and welcome to the forum.
You never forget your first......IWC. Your selection, the Port Chrono 3714/RG markers as entry into the world of IWC, IMHO is a great choice. The shear beauty of that well balanced dial layout, flaired chapter ring and recessed sub-dials is pure genius. As a recent recipient of the 3714-45, I can tell you that you will be overjoyed every time you look at it.
New for 2012, the 3714 now comes with a deployant buckle. I have found it to be the perfect watch for just about any dressy or sporty occasion.

Hallo und guten Morgen,
ich habe die IWC Fliegeruhr vom DFB gesehen und über diese Werbung bin ich auf das Forum gestoßen. Ich bin ein SinnUhren Liebhaber; wer überzeugt mich von IWC?

My love for watches started at a very young age but I just recently discovered the beauty and sophistication of a mechanical watch.
It started almost 3 years ago.
I was in Hong Kong for a short vacation after college when my father surprised me with a trip to watch store. He asked me to choose which timepiece I would like. I hurriedly called my best friend to ask an advice on mechanical watches. He said I should look at IWC.
After asking the store clerk for their watches, I saw the Mark XVI. It was beautiful. Simple, elegant and a classic. Everything I wanted in a watch. My father happily purchased the watch for me and it was my graduation gift. It meant a lot to me.
How the second hand moves fascinates me. It's different from what I was used to all these years. It's different from a quartz. "This is something." I said to myself.
In a month, I will be returning to Hong Kong for a business trip with my father. He and I look forward to another visit to a boutique there and maybe I'll get myself a Miramar Chronograph.

Hi all,
My passion with mechanical watches started with my dad giving me one on my 21st bday. The watch is now around 25 yrs old (its a watch he was wearing for almost 15 yrs then) and still runnin perfectly, a testemant to that a well made mechanical watch lasts :) Learning the mechanics in a watch was and is still exciting
This passion now forms a part of the bond between father n son.

I first became interested in mechanical watches when I was a child but at that time there were only mechanical watches.
I did become interested in quartz watches for a while but I soon lost interest in quartz watches because I found then lacking in character or depth. I will be honest I still have some old quartz watches hanging around but I have no real affection for any of them.
I have an older IWC DaVinci and several other mechanic wrist and pocket watches and I have some kind of affection for them all. I guess it is because mechanical watches demand a certain amount of personal involvement. I mean they must be worn if they are automatic and they must be wound up if they are a wind up design and every week they must set to the right time or more often if they are an older model.
The movement and the special sound of each watch ticking. Each watch has it's own special sound. I find it rather like keeping mechanical pets because it is necessary to do something for them to continue running.
There have been mechanical watches in some form or another for hundreds of years and in many ways the mechanical watches of today are still a part of that development chain that started so long ago. There are other reasons but these are just a few why I love mechanical watches.
