Hello!
I'm am new here and am *hoping* to become an IWC owner very soon. I am interested in a few different models, but can't seem to settle on just one. I tend to prefer the stainless/black combination and am looking at the Mark XVI on the lower end of my budget up to the Portuguese Chronograph 3714 at the absolute ceiling.
I love that I could wear the Mark XVI while fishing and other activities, but it just feels like it's missing that something extra. I like the UTC, but the Spitfire's current steel face just doesn't seem to work on my wrist. Is it possible to get this watch in a black face?
Back to the 3714, I have another non-IWC watch that uses the 7750 movement and have had problems with it. Certain functions have ceased and I question its overall durability as an everyday watch. Should this concern me about the 3714 as well?

Bill. My Mark XVI at 39mm, whilst "small" compared to other IWC's on the wrist, somehow always seems to feel "right" under any dress conditions.
Possibly so, because of the black dial.
I would have no hesitation in recommending the UTC here, as a first IWC ...but, yes he might end up wanting a bigger watch! I would simply say that from small acorns, grow big oaks. I would say, he should follow his gut feelings, and go with what he finds nice.

I'm fairly new to the forum and wanted to share my recent adventure. I was interested in a high quality Pilot watch that was casual-sporty looking yet could also pass for semi-dress when needed. Recommendations and reviews narrowed my search to IWC. Upon viewing the Pilot Mark XVI online, it was "love at first sight". I had to see it in person. I found an AD that had one, but was told it was sold and awaiting pick-up. However, the AD invited me to come in to see it... so I did.
I can say without hesitation, this puppy looks 10 X better in real life than its picture. The AD let me try it on. I can also tell you that for a 39mm watch, it appears to wear a bit bigger than it is. I think its because of the layout of the dial as well as a thinner bezel.
So...as far as it missing something, I would say that it is perfect in every way. Clean design and basic functions for everyday wear ss well as just the right size and thickness for most occasions. I'm sure you would be very satisfied with this model.
One is on order for me and I can't wait for it's arrival. In the meantime, I'm picking out my next IWC. One problem... I want them all !!!!

Andy, you have summoned up the Mark XVI perfectly....
You will find, that wearing this watch whether at leisure, or for some more formal / smarter dress - it's simply fits the moment. I love mine...in fact, I'm wearing it this weekend.
So it this is the watch that JakeEngel goes for, he wont be sorry either - but then, lets face it (as you will soon find out), most IWC have that effect on one.

Last month I bought my Pilot UTC. It is the second one I have. The first was bought by my father about the 60´s and is a very simple hand wound steel model but very nice too. I remember that my father wants a more expensive model that the importer showed us, but it was very expensive for he at that time.In 2001 I saw the UTC for the first time in Athenas (Greece), and I fell in love with the model, but I did´t buy it, something that I regret later. Later, I asked for that IWC model in different European important cities (last time in December, in Berlin), but every time the answer was the same "We can get for you the model, but in a few days (or in a week)". I don´t know why, but the IWC offcial agents, never have that model available in the shop. Ironically, I finally bought the Pilot UTC in Buenos Aires, my city. Someone knows why the UTC is a "hide model" in the collection?

Because it´s not produced since several years. If an official agent says that they would get the watch for you this means that they will check the stocks around the world. That´s my assumption.

I have gone through similar gyrations in the past about very similar watches.
I agree with you about the 3714. I thought it might be my first chronograph until I had a chance to handle one. I am afraid when I used the push buttons for the chronograph that they really did not feel substantial. It was not a terribly smooth motion, and I remembered thinking this seems like something that would break easily. I do love the Portuguese line, and I recently posted about finally getting the 5001, which is terrific.
I have the Mark XV instead of the Mark XVI. The first version I ever saw was the Mark XII, but this was when I was a student and in no position to be buying such a watch. I finally got the Mark XV when I actually working for a living. It is a touch smaller at 38mm. I got it on the metal bracelet and also bought a leather band with deployant clasp for it. I agree with the other poster that it feels more substantial, especially with the metal bracelet.

Hello Jake,
The short answer is: "follow your heart". Look at the watches, collect the watches, sleep on it, and buy the watch that you like best. Your unconscious mind continues processing while you rest and "tells" you what to do (believe it or not but it is good practice, as you can read in Jonah Lehrer's book How We Decide).
I would not be afraid that the 7750 does not perform. It is a proven and well-developed movement. My son has his 3714 now for some time and wears it continuously, except - of course - not during sports. You need an Ingenieur to do that. ;-)

Good luck and wisdom in deciding!
