Greetings all...Quick question to the many IWC experts out there. Does anyone know what type/grade of "Stainless Steel" is used for the cases/components? The reason I ask is because other manufactures refer to (something like) 316L or 904L steel being used in their products. Not sure what is considered a premium grade stainless in the luxury watch industry. Also, does IWC use the same grade of steel throughout its entire line ?
I can't respond fully right now, but if you can please check the archives. There were several discussions about this; a possible keyword might be 316. If I recall correctly, IWC uses the same steel in all models, and it is a premium grade surgical steel. Some companies advertise that their "grade" is the best but in fact it's a complex choice due to polishing, scratch appearance, and other considerations. Hardness in itself is not always better.

Thanks Michael for a quick reply and guidence (archives, keyword - 316). Yes.. there were a few discussions regarding "Stainless Steel" its grading, properties, scratching, etc. all which were very helpful in understanding more the characteristics of this durable metal. As I am about to take delivery of my first IWC (Mark XVI), I feel much more assured that the stainless steel used is "premium grade" and meets the high level of quality IWC demands throughout its product line.
Many Thanks, Andy
