Hello everyone,
I am looking to buy my first vintage IWC watch and found one on Polish auction site. Seller claims that his vintage automatic Portofino from late 60s (caliber 8541) is in excellent condition, just after renovation by a specialist. The price is 900EUR.
Do you think it is a good deal and is it possible that the watch could be fake?
Here are the photos:
Any questions I should ask the seller? I am meeting him this Wednesday.
It's a nice watch, and a classic IWC. But it's NOT a "vintage Portofino" --that's just marketing and revisionist thinking.
We also can't really comment on watches for sale (because we're non-commercial). But I will say that these automatic movement IWCs, in steel and in good condition, do sell within the range you mention and sometimes somewhat more. The movements are among the best ever made.
The watch appears authentic. But it is "just one more nice vintage IWC model" and not a "Portofino" or any other named model. You can see many models like this one in my compilation of old IWC catalogs click here
It has about as much to do with Portofino or the current Portofino models or early Portofino models as Warsaw does.

I would be very grateful for your help.

I do not fully understand your first sentence. What do you mean by 'it's NOT a "vintage Portofino"' - it's fake or it's not this model or sth else?
