I know that it's a very general issue, nevertheless, would be good to get your feedback...as I posted previously, I'm playing with the idea to have a next IWC..I considered and still do either an UTC or a 3717...but now I saw an almost new (bought last September) 500107..which is offered for some 25% off by a private seller as a 2nd hand here in CH...needless to say, that's an original portuguese automatic with all papers, warranty till 2012, almost hardly used...tempting.. as I said, would be glad to get your thoughts.. thanks, simius

5001 is a great watch, though certainly different from 3717 or the UTC. 5001 is dressier and personally I found 3717 a bit more comfortable as a daily wear. Any of the three would be a great choice, depending on exactly what you want. Certainly the differences between black dial and white dial and between sportier or dressier are considerations only you can decide.
We are not supposed to discuss price here. I am not familiar with prices in CH - only in US. Let me say only that I urge you to contact some AD's to ask their best price on a new piece before buying the lightly used one you mentioned.
Years ago, I would buy a second hand contemporary watch without hesitation. But since then I've had several problems with some of them --and sometimes the watches are sold because they haven't been perfect. To me the additional cost of buying from an authorized dealer is well worth it, in addition to a full warranty there is better service and a continuing relationship which can be beneficial in the future.
I make exceptions when there is an impossible-to-find watch or if I really know the dealer. But even then there are risks: I recall a friend who bought a $30,000 used watch second-hand (not an IWC) from a "good dealer" and a week later there was a problem. It cost him $2,000 and 6 months to get the watch fixed, hopefully right.

Hello Simius,
I agree with the other gentlemen here. You'll be surprised how close an AD can come to (if not beat) some of the prices you find around the internet or a private seller. Its like buying a used Mercedes, it ll probably run well, but knowing that you can roll right up to the dealer for questions, concerns or repairs makes it worth paying a bit extra. ...just my 2 cents. Good Luck!
as I said, would be glad to get your thoughts..
thanks,
simius

If you feel confident and the price is good, why not, although an AD can offer more guarantees to my opinion.
