Hello to all of you guys,
After my very poor marriage (I talk about watch here... ;)), then after my poor marriage (still talking about watch here... :p)... here I am again.
I am proposed a Cal 74 (882879), coming in its original case (887224). Dial is not the orignal one but really nice. Croco strap looks IWC genuine... I post the photos at the end of this post.
DateYourIWC tells me: The movement is a Sav. calibre 74, dating from the year 1928. The case was most probably produced resp. delivered around 1928.
Can I have your opinion here? Shall I jump into this marriage? As this forum is not supposed to talk about money, could you please send me your idea of what could be its good price to my email adress: christophe . keip AT gmail . com ? Hey, I am not trying to sell it to you, just trying to figure out the good price for it.
Does the seller state that the wrist watch case is original or does he state that the case back is original? I'll bet the only indication is that the case back is original. Please look at what the seller does not say, it can be a very useful indication that the watch is not genuine.

Hi Cellar,
thanks for your reply and your opinion. I appreciate.
Here is what the seller says: - movement is original - case back is original (case, 42mm, is custom indeed) - caliber c74 original; seller says it keeps very good time (10s /day) - dial is not original, but comes with nice look&feel (from my opinion) - strap is original iwc black crocodile leather (used but good conditions) - plexiglas is good with minimal scratch at 2
Well, this is a marriage I know... The question is not shall I go for marriage or full original one (I guess appart from the price, no one would hesitate... ;) ). I remembed Whichwatch comments, in a previous post, telling me to go for a real Cal 3531, 89, 83, 88., instead of looking at marriage. And I do. Not really successful yet indeed... and I spent some time recently on vintage speedies... but this is another story. But I keep on looking for those piece of history.
Now the question is: is this marriage worth or not? I am not rich (I wish I would :)). I have plenty of time (I mean at night mainly.. :)). You know, I am looking at something special, beautiful, with quality, whether or not 100% original.
I learn little by little, try to stay humble, and opened to discussion. Still your opinion counts to me.
For: 1 (I like it but I want to challenge its interest) Against: 1

To me the hour and minute hands are fractionally too long as the hour hand covers the numbers and the minute hand is into the rail track. Compare current watches from the collection. I can see the visual appeal but surely what ever it costs you will be kicking yourself when those funds would help towards a correct watch that ticks the necessary boxes.
It is however a watch that someone with a fair degree of expertise has put together and done a good job visually. But......Would you want a Ferrari with a BMW engine or visa versa?
The Cellar is a man who has a fountain of knowledge and I would if I was in your position be guided by what he has to say. It's all very tempting to jump because you think you have found something, but if it's wrong then it's wrong and will never be right and when it comes to service it you might find IWC will not service it because even if all parts are IWC parts they may come from even four watches, a dial from 1, a movement and case back from 2 and a top part of the case from 3 and we have not even discussed the various components of the movement!
Keep looking and keep saving, and listen to people like the cellar who has probably forgotten more than you or I will ever know re IWC pieces.

Greg(s), Roberto, you finally convinced me. After 3 tries, trying to persuade myself it was the right choice, I will now leave those marriage away... Thanks a lot guys ! If any of you see me back with a marriage request, just come and kick my... well you know what.... ;)
Cheers Christophe. PS: after all, I should wear my brand new 5001 in one week-time... so what should I need more in the following weeks ? well, I have an idea... ;)

I am sure you're right Greg.
I think the more interested I am with vintage watches, the more I want a 100% original one. Then it will become a matter of budget... I have to find the right balance between the price and the prestige of the watch. Now I will finally have my Portuguese, I may start looking at 3531, 89, 83, or 88, or even other brands... ;)
All the best to readers and writers around here... :)

So would I!
Christophe, start demanding nothing but original, this is the real playground, leave marriages behind, forever. Believe me :)
