Michael Friedberg Wrote:If by "gold capped" you mean the case is gold except for a steel back, then the model should be a reference 766 or 766 AD.If you mean "plated" gold, then to my knowlege that wasn't ever done by IWC on any model (except some pocket watches) and I suspect it's an after-market alteration.

The sides (inner and outer) of the lugs. The remaining parts of the case are all in steel. This is rather worrying because I hate to wear a watch that has been 'molested'.Thank you.

Greg Chalk Wrote:Michael. Having been in the trade many years ago, there used to be a rule in the UK that if a watch was gold on the front but the back was steel then the watch was not able to be hallmarked and was plated or rolled gold rather than 9/14 or 18 carat. Is this marriage of a genuine gold front and a steel back something that happens (happened) for certain markets only?
iwcforme Wrote:It sounds genuine enough but you can send it to IWC for authentication and supply of stammbuchauszug ( extract from the ledger ) Here's mine. They are termed as "mixte case" ......mine is 14ct gold/ steel Ivaniwcforme

I know they were sold I'm Switzerlamd, but I don't know if they were not sold in the UK.Oceandweller -I'm not Ivan but his is a 766 and the crown should be gold. Only the back is steel on that model (and without seeing yours I wonder if it has a switched back).
