I've gone through probably 100 airports and never had a problem --except one, London Heathrow. I took off my Portuguese Tourbillon and put it in my briefcase, which then went through X-ray. It came out magnetized. I have heard of similar problems at LHR.
In a few months I will be going through security at LHR several times. I'm debating bringing a demagnetizer on the trip, since I will be carrying at least two very nice watches but not my Tourbillon.

I travel a lot to many countries including some in the third world. I would NEVER simply leave my watch in the tray at security. As several others have said, putting it into a case and then inside your hand luggage before you get to security is the only option.
Nice tip on the OAKLEY case, will invest in one myself.

My solution, which has worked perfectly three times in a row now: put your watch in your jacket pocket (assuming you're wearing a jacket). Then carefully fold the jacket and place it in the larger plastic tray. Simple as that!

I've been in and out a lot of airport security and this is the best way! Otherwise you might have to explain where you have bought your IWC watch and show your receipt..... When you can't show it you might have to pay local tax...... Have been in this situation once when having it in my briefcase :( Believe me it's a lot of unwanted paperwork.......

I've been through LHR a few times, but, always had my Big Pilot on.. No issues with it ;)
