I have said it before. George Kern told me several years ago that they made a mistake by not making the BPP a regular edition watch. And so, it looks like there are going to be numerous limited editions which ultimately will accomplish the same thing.

Actually, I see the strategy here as a little different, and I know it will change in the future.
Turn the clock back to 2008 and 2009 --in general, there was a huge market hit and a shaky economy. What would you do as a watch company? Other than produce more "basic" watches and steel watches, how about doing special sales contracts with key retailers? You'd need a watch that is higher priced (so the company can make enough on it) but you'd need something that the retailer can sell relatively easily (so they can recoup their purchase price and make a quick profit). You'd need something special, too --that will help the retailer market the product.
What falls within those parameters of IWC's product line? I'd submit the best candidate was (and is) a special variation of the Big Pilot Perpetual. It's good for IWC's sales in a difficult market, and it rewards special or best retailers. And it gets them to open their checkbook in a tight economy. It's a win-win, and also a win for the the end-user (that's us, the buyer from the retailer). Nice business planning though.
You will see far less IWC special editions in 2012. There's only a few planned, and most will be boutique editions or for certain geographic markets. There's a need for a different strategy in a different market climate, I would think.

Thanks MF for the input.
I find this interesting and another clear sign that GK and his management team are doing things right - I only trust and hope that through the continued growth and success of IWC that the core values of IWC history and legacy are not lost. To date, I have seen no sign of neglect to those values, and salute the management team for that.

slight changes between these two, but I like the new one more primarily because of the more shaded / grey hour numerals.
as always Franz, great job for keeping track.

That is a stunning watch. The special editions I've seen for Z&C are always a bit "different." The greenish 5004 (or was it a 5002?), anyway, is quite unique for a BP, as the dials have always been black or very close to black, except for the blue platinum version.
Anyway, I guess in Monte Carlo you just need to stand out a bit more.

As you say Alan, we probably will see more of these LE's as each larger AD or jewelery chain have their own Editions issued.
Thanks Franz for posting.

And I also like the special silver-plated markings in this edition. Quite easy to distinguish it from other PPCs.
Thanks for the photo!
