I know many of you remember the day or days leading up to your first IWC purchase. Like you, I did my research, I tried on many models, and counted my pennies. I finally started with the IWC Aquatimer (IW354805) and then traded up to the Ingenieur AMG. I still miss my original Aquatimer. It was this first time I felt a sense of pride in the timepiece on my wrist. In your opinion, what is the best IWC model for a newbie in the world of mechanical watches?
Please excuse the iPhone 4S picture. It's good, but not great.

It´s very easy: The best IWC is a IWC in which you fall in love from the first day and which you do net get out of your head. For me it was the Yacht Club.
To my thinking, the Ref. 3717 Pilot's Chronograph is not a "beginner's watch", but rather it's a watch for everyone, including newbies. It's classic, it's versatile and it's a best buy.

assuming you meant current models...
I would say Mark XVI. Great for a beginner.
Then again, some people would buy a Platinum Perpetual Calendar as their "beginner's IWC". All I could say would be...
... ... ...
(nothing... 'cos, I'm completely speechless)

I agree with Kelvin that the Mark XVI is a great watch to start your IWC collection. It is a classic pilot dial, has an anti-magnetic inner case, and is available on a strap or well-engineered bracelet. Although the Mark XVI Spitfire versions do not conform to a purist view of pilot watches, it was my choice because I felt the silver dial had a versatility not found with the black dial. The Spitfire Mark XVI was my first IWC, and is still my go-to constant companion when I travel. Photography by Billb

If I would have to start all over again with limited means, I would go for the Pilot's Chrono: great looks, great movement, great size and a nice fun feature in the chrono, with the bonus of the day.
Kind regards, Paul

I fully agree with Moonboat - the first one you really fall in love with is the best beginner. And I will be that crazy one who started with the rose gold Portuguese Perpetual Calendar - but boy do I love it ;o)

I would suggest either Mark XVI or 3717 Chrono as a logical beginning with IWC.
