Recently acquired a beautiful IWC watch, 3717.01
Have a detail question about this watch part.
1. The side of the hour + minute hand's black paint seem to be chipped off a little. Although not noticable when looking straight down to the watch, it is certainly observable looking close up at the side angle. Is this normal? Could this be observed and repaired by IWC?
2. Although this was purcahsed at AD, there's one thing that keeps bothering my attention. From my knowledge and official IWC pilot picture on the web, the subdial pins are supposed to be stainless steel/silver. However, mine are black. This watch was purchased October, 2011. Does this pin vary depending on production year?

Certainly love this watch, but being a high end watch collector, I can't just pass these things... Any idea?

Hy NAVI371701, I owned this watch as the 3717 01 and the 3717 04. The pins of the subdials were always silver, but your fist problem with the hands paint I also had with my first 3717.
Solution: The best way to solve your problem ist to go to a official IWC Store and explain your request.

My 3717 from a few years ago had silver centers as seen in this photo. It is possible the color was changed at some time. Perhaps your AD can check with IWC.

Thank you guys, Although quite strange, I do trust my AD for authenticity. I have outer carboard box with matching serial number sticker, I have warranty card with AD store name computer engraved (not even hand written). And ovbiously the caseback serial number is matching all the others.
I just did not expect these qualities out of IWC. (the subdial second red paint is not filled up properly, hour and minute hand black paint chipped off)
I am sending questions to IWC regarding the black subdial pins, the subdial pins are the most bothering factor that keeps questioning myself about the authenticity. I wonder if this is a new trend by IWC design... (I bought the watch last month)
We will see how it goes. Being a collector, I dealt with high end companies and no doubt IWC will be great too..

UPDATE...
It is confirmed that the watch is authentic, and the black pins are authentic.
The newer version of IWC 3717.01 pilot chrono has black pins matching the face color. The "older" version has silver pin. How do I determine old vs new? It is estimated that watches made since Mid 2011 have BLACK subdial pins. The main center pin (for minute + hour hand) are still Silver pin.
Could not find any of this info and had to experience finding info + confirming myself with my watch, but good detailed information to know.

Hello, I'm sorry if my question is in the wrong category or area. I recently aquired a nice gent's IWC but have no idea of the model or style. Would like to read up and learn some of the features if someone can assist me. Not sure how to post a photo if there's any help there too? Thanks, Don

Navi371701,
When this post first appeared, it was interesting to me because I was gathering as much information about the 3717 and the upcoming 3777 as I could for comparison purposes.
When the new 3777 pic's were released in mid-January 2012, I called my AD to see if the 3717 was still available. Luck was on my side as he had just received one piece and was not sure if any more would be produced.
So, now that this post has reappeared, the information regarding the shaft pins on your 3717 being black vs. stainless and that the latest production models were confirmed changed has me a bit puzzled.
My 3717 was shipped by IWC less than a week before I purchased it and that was late January 2012. The shaft pins are stainless. All pic's that I've ever seen of the 3717 are also stainless.
My question is, was this "Changeover To Black Pins" actually confirmed by IWC or communicated to you by the AD ?
Has anyone else ever seen a 3717 with "Black Pins" ?

The 3777 has black pins for the subdials. As the 3717 is running out, maybe the last 3717 are fit with black pins because IWC ran out of steel pins and didn't bother to order a few new steel ones. The black pins on the 3777 look quite smart.
I remember me being worried in 2000 when I bought the small, running out rose gold Portuguese Automatic. I suddenly noticed that the central pin was steel where the hands were gold coloured. That bothered me for a while, but it was normal. Quite remarkable how big such a pin becomes when looking at it under those circumstances.
Kind regards, Paul

Hi there , today , Okt.27th. 2012 i bought this wonderfull watch (3717-01) from an AD in Germany. A brand new one. I think it must be one of the last examples anywhere. Like this one more then the latest modell. Concerning the black subdial pins : on my watch they are also black !! I think they changed production on the latest watches. All papers are matching serialnumber etc. and watch is from an official IWC dealer. This confirms "Navi371701"'s update from Dec 1. 2011

Good luck,
Hello Thiesthel,
Your reply to this past posting got me thinking. I too was surprised that you found a new in box (NIB) 3717 as 2012 is coming to an end. My thought is that this piece you acquired might have been in your AD's stock for quite awhile.
Regarding the posting from Navi371701 back on Dec. 1, 2011...he indicates the "black pins" on his newly acquired 3717. My feelings are that your's was probably shipped from IWC around the same time. My AD in the U.S. showed me the IWC invoicing paperwork that my 3717 with "Stainless" pins was shipped mid-January 2012. So yes...it might have been that the last production pieces of the 3717 were a combination of stainless and black pin designs shipped worldwide from Schaffhausen.
Of course, this has no bearing on the beauty of the 3717 and like you, IMHO the 3717 is the preferred model over the newest 3777.

I agree....that's what makes this forum great. So many IWC fans who can dissect every angle of the collection. No detail is "off limits".
If your theory is correct...I now know that mine was not one of the last few.
Best,
Andy
