Still learning, though I am interested why there is so much facination with BPs. I am looking at purchasing a Pilot Chronograph with S/S braclet (or maybe gold, maybe). Just curious, am I missing something. Almost new to the group.

Ill try to tell you just a few obvious differences. First and most obvious ( I think) is that the pilot chrono is a chronograph and the BP is not. Next would be the physical size; The pilot chrono is 42mm and the BP is 46mm. The chrono has a power reserve of (I think) around 42-46 hrs while the BP has a seven day power reserve (Nice!). The pilot chrono houses a base 7750 movement that is modified a great deal by IWC while the Big Pilot houses a completely in-house caliber 51111. This difference in movement alone (I think) has a lot to do with it. Based on looks, I can say that they are two very different looking watches. Both are lovely in their own right. Lets not forget the slight difference in price : ) As far as "fascination" goes, all I could suggest is to try them both on and decide for yourself. Hope this helps a bit. Best of luck to you, Paul.

Still puzzled, thanks Joe for your reply. It looks like you get so much more with a chronograph, except size and seven day power reserve. One could purchase a watch winder and still have thousands left over.
I will ask my wife to check out a BP on me and see what she thinks. She was leaning towards the gold pilot chrono or the gold portuguese seven day automatic. The latter two look very nice, though she did say they looked a little pretentious.
I still like the S/S pilot chrono with S/S bracelet. Hmm? Decisions.

Wellllll : ), since you mentioned the seven day. Check out the 5001-09 with the black dial (kinda stealthy) or the white gold 5001-06 with the grey dial. Both are very nice AND versatile. Cheers!

You get a wonderful onion crown too with the Big Pilot :)
...but wonderful choices all.

@Shing....
Everytime I see your photography, I'm blown away !! Fantastic Shots...Excellent Angles. Keep 'em Coming. I'm going to investagate one of those Leica D-Lux5 ?? I think that's what camera you mentioned you use.
@Paul,
Now I'm not a "Gold" guy, but really, just look at that "Shing Shot" of the Pilot 3717 - Gold Chrono. I just acquired a 3717 - SS that you are considering. I love it and yes, it gives you alot of bang for the buck. But if I was a "Gold Guy", that Gold Chrono would be on my priority list. It just looks so elegant yet sporty. Perfect size and balance for a golden beauty.

I'm not Joe, but I'm also sometimes puzzled by what attracts people. If anyone could ever predict or explain for sure what was going to be highly attractive and desirable to people and become an icon in its industry, they would no doubt get very rich in a short time. Steve Jobs may have come closest to that talent.

Hi Friends, I have just bought my first IWC and the choice was easy, a Big Pilot! I truly love this piece and have done so a long time.
I have had Rolex and Panerai before this but nothing compares, this watch is the very essence of elegance, technical precision and pure beauty combined. Thanks IWC for this!

Ps. How do I upload pics to this blog/site? Or is it only for WM?
Kind regards,

all i can say is the BP is big, bold and beautiful. a real 'manly' piece which makes a very strong statement without being too pretentious.
good luck and do post photos of your decision,
