Trying out a new camera with a macro shot of the movement. The lighting is not right yet, but seeing the Pellaton Winding System and the balance wheel up close is worth the first effort.

While in NYC last week for the Boutique, I made the mistake of visiting one of the big camera retailers as well. I picked up the Nikon D700, full FX sensor body and a couple of Nikkor lenses. I'm heading to the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu in a couple of months and wanted to upgrade my DSLR.
But the real benefit will be more watch photography of my favorite brand.

Wow Bill, those are great travel plans! Enjoy the preparations and make sure you're comfortable with the camera so you can amaze us with your pictures after your return!

For some macro shots I use a 8" x 8" piece of white foam core board with a hole cut in it that I slide over the end of the lens using friction to hold it in place. The white surface reflects the light back onto the subject for more even and less harsh lighting. Of course, you don't always want to achieve that effect.

Bill, congrats on the D700, you can nearly shoot in a coal mine with that. The new D800 is 36 mp and is sure to gobble up cards and hard drives in next to no time. Have the 17-35, 28-70 80-200 all AFS f2.8 jobs plus some primes, must replace my D200 with a FF to shoot my lovely yellow gold 1850 when it's back from a service. Enjoy the trip, friend did it but his photos very dark of iguanas in the sea using auto Program mode on D90. On a forthcoming trip like that, use camera lots before going to get to know it so any errors on the trip are easily salvageable upon your return. Using its faster brother D3S a pro nature photographer Andy Rouse shoots mainly with 200-400 lens at ISO 1000 because it works fine with no chroma noise. Sorry MF, would hate Bill to go on a trip like that without a tip or two.

Man I am envious - Galapagos is one of my dream destinations! The wife and I are planning to visit Machu Pichu next summer though, and I am contemplating investing in the new Nikon D800 for that (hence the question).
Now which IWC should one wear for a hiking trip on the Inca Trail??

Similar attempt from my side, also with a new camera (Nikon D3100+40/2,8 macro) So far I have realised that it is not so easy to get bright and close pictures of my beauties, need to keep on practise.
