Good decision - an all time classic.
Like you I too waited too long to add this beauty to my collection. It's simple clean layout just stand out!
Wear in good health and welcome to the forum. You can / should also mentally start to prepare yourself to deal with a bad case of "uber virus" - given, that the way you have contracted the virus clearly indicates to me that some Tags will be offloaded towards feeding the virus - LOL

Congrats and welcome! Your decision cannot be questioned at all - I have all the respect in the world for any Portuguese, but in my humble opinion the 5001 is a classier watch than the chrono.
My journey is actually almost the same as yours, I started out as a Tag man, having collected a few along the way, until last summer when the gorgeous Portuguese PC was staring at me - I was sold. The PPC had to be mine, I made the IWC leap and have not looked back since :-)

Very possible Mark. As you could see from my signature, i've already unloaded 3 out of 5. TAGs are great but IWC is far more superior.

I guess many of us have had the same experience. Both the chrono and the 5001 are classics, but the 5001 has this exeptionally nice movement inside which makes is more desirable in the end. Congratulations on your decision.

I too agree that the 5001 is one beautiful classy watch. It also is on my shopping list. HOWEVER.....
I want to give a shout out to the 3714-01 which was refered to as a "costly mistake". I would strongly disagree. Like Notoriousbigs mentioned, it had been on his wanted list for a long time and that he wanted a Chrono. OK...you sir chose IMHO the perfect watch that you were wishing for. You could not have made a better choice. The 3714 is a timeless beauty. No wonder it's been in the lineup for so long. It has many fans.
For a good year and a half, The 3714-01 gold markers was calling to me. A couple of weeks ago it finally arrived and I couldn't be happier. I changed the black strap to a navy blue to bring out the counter minutes sub-dial and seconds "blued" hands. All I can say is WOW !! I just love it.
Yes..sometimes we see other things we want after the fact. Maybe it requires selling a past purchase in order to acquire our new love. But to say what was once a top desire is now a costly mistake, excuse the pun, I can't buy it.
Enjoy that 5001....for it is a gorgeous watch. Wear it well and in good health. But please, when the next IWC masterpiece catches your fancy (and it will) hopefully that 5001 won't be viewed as a costly mistake.

That's a great decision.
I bought my first IWC back in 2007 and it was also a 5001, I picked a different version as you can see below, but after now 4 further purchases, I still love this watch. It's a timeless classic that I will never tire of wearing.

Thanks for reading my opinion.
So many (IWC) watches...so little time.

Zyxtimer - I would love to see photos of your 5001-09 on brown strap. I'm considering that combination as well.
Best regards,
