When weighing up which new of the new Pilot range to purchase, it struck me that I could buy both the new Pilot Chronograph(377701) plus the new Mark XVII for the same price as the new Spitfire Chronograph. Two IWC's for the price of one! Is an in-house IWC movement worth that amount of price differential? I am tempted to get both the Pilot Chrono (3777) and the Mark XVII. What does everyone else think?
Obviously values are subjective and differ, but I would rather have one great watch than several lesser ones. I sold a portion of my collection to buy an IWC tourbillon, and have never regretted the move. I don't look at it like "one tourbillon" movement vs. "other movements"; there is the whole watch and concept. I can buy several prints or one painting, but to me the question is what is great art?

I think you should also consider what you need from the chronograph function. The 3777 has a 12 hour elapsed time recorder, and a day display as well as date, the Spitfire does not.

To start with, all IWC watches are great in their own right, I suppose one cannot be disappointed by any of them. When comparing the 3777 with the 3878, the former has more functions for less money, it is a wonderful watch. The latter has the ardoise dial and the 89365 movement. I personnaly would go for the latter, just because it is a bit more special. And I already have a 3717. By the way, when I would have a 3777, I might not buy a Mark XVII too, I might consider another, more different watch, or maybe something completely different, like a few days holiday with my wife: I would not buy two watches at the same time. But that is just me.
Kind regards, Paul

I would definitely go for the spitfire. Beautiful ardoise dial, in house movement etc. You don't need to have so many pilot watches, 1 great pilot in your collection would do the trick :) just my humble opion.
