I have the IWC book from 1987(ISBN 3-906500-16-0) which has a fantastic list of movement numbers with information such as date, size, calibre, type and thickness. Does a similar list exist for Case Numbers and if so, can it be found on-line?

No, as far as I know, the case-numbers are not in the archive books. The case numbers are always higher than the movement numbers. There are pocket watches with the same calibbres but with very different case numbers. Sometimes there are large gaps with several years.

Thanks Hans-Georg, The reason I ask is I have made a recent purchase. It is an 800 silver PW. Both the case & movement have JWC marks. The case number is 155XXX and the movement number is 230XXX. Do you think the 'large gap' between these numbers is too large to be genuine? Leo

I'm not Hans but permit me to answer. The gap is not too large, but the case number is lower than the movement number. As Hans says, that's not supposed to be (actually I have heard of a few with matching numbers but never lower for the case).
This may be a movement put in an existing case ex-factory --a marriage of sorts. Why not get IWC to check its archives? For 50 CHF (or less for you) you will see whether there's a record of this movement in this case.

Thanks Michael, I thought that may be the the case(low case no./high movement no.) but needed an expert opinion. Even if it is a marriage, it can't be too far off original and being my first IWC PW, I am still very proud of it. Over the next few months I will restore it and attempt to post some photos of the progress & results. Leo
