Hello there,
As a newbie on this forum I want to ask if I may request your opinion on a green dial watch I ran into on eBay. If not, please close this topic, thanks anyway.
I very much do like this watch, not only the caliber is what I am looking for for some while but also this specific color is great (IMO, I can understand if you dislike it)
But do you think it is an authentic watch and color ? I am unsure and don't have enough experience with these type of watches. I don't see the fish on the crown but does that make it fake ?
Also I can see quite some rust on the case. I wonder if that can be restored ? Any other remarks on this watch ?
I apologize, but since we're non-commercial here I had to remove your link and instead I posted an image of the watch.
I've seen a few green dial IWCs, including a Yacht Club which I bought and which can be found in the archives (use the search function, upper right). I've not seen any as early as one with a 8531 movement but I think it's possible, and without physical inspection I think it's likely.
Usually minor rust can be removed with skilled polishing.

very interesting discussion, and very interesting green dial calibre 85 if it is indeed that.
before I went to bed I saw this too and I thought the dial looked funny: very glossy 'third party dial refinishing', but particularly the position of the scripts looks a bit off to me, could it be repainted, especially "Swiss Made"?
just my opinion here - would love to hear corrections.

Maybe that I'm wrong but I haven't seen yet an IWC dial of that decade and cal. type with a 'SWISS MADE' print at 6 o'clock only 'SWISS' or 'T SWISS T'. Go with Antonio, an "expert refinish" no factory restoration.

I apologize that I have nothing to add to the dial origin question.
What I do find interesting is that while I never cared for the color of the Boris Becker Portuguese chrono, this watch, with what seems to be a similar color, appears very attractive.

Thank you all for your helpful contributions, it learned me a lot more about the watch in general.
I am still puzzled about the authenticity of the watch / dial. Is there some kind of catalog where IWC watches can be looked up ? And what can be said about the crown not having the fish ?
Or should I consider the dial to be a nice piece of paintwork done afterwards. In that case my interest is low on buying it.

Hi A90,
Michael's website can assist: http://www.iwcforum.com/Vintage_Catalogs.html
I can't comment on the lack of fish crown, although I believe most if not all original crowns have it.
Personally, I would stay away from this timepiece - too many red flags, and there will always be another watch to one's liking to procure, that meets all requirements of authenticity. Just my opinion.

Whoever dreamt it 'expertly refinished' have probably got more than a leg in the sale. The original versions of this dial are of a very high quality, it being green in colour does'nt trump a more commonly seen variant. That said.. i'm led to believe some collecting quarters are willing to bend the truth in order to ring the rare bell..eventually 'mint-untouched' will be 'the new rare'.
