I bought a spitfire mark XVI less than three months ago. I noticed this morning the second hand is running about twice the normal speed. Any ideas? Is this a known problem? Should I ship it back to the authorized dealer where I purchased or ship it back directly to IWC?

Hi Rchew68, The most likely cause for your watch running so fast is an interior coil of the hairspring being caught on the outside of the regulating pins. This shortens the functioning length of the spring, causing the balance wheel to oscillate much faster than normal and the watch to run many times faster than normal. All modern wristwatches are designed so that his will never occur during normal wear. Only a shock, hard enough to deform the spring, can cause it to get caught. It is possible to repair the damage without completely servicing the watch but the work is not covered by the warranty so you may be charged. Your symptoms may also indicate a more serious problem like a broken balance. You should return it to your AD for diagnosis and repair. Leo
