' And I will be very interested in your opinion '
Don't get too strung out with my opinion Todd, i'm never in a great rush to educate some of the 'merchants' who frequent this forum into how to perfectly replicate a vintage dial, it's the reason MF witholds the port serial numbers (incase you were wondering)....much prefer to speak when somebodies been sold a bum steer for a premium. Enjoy your watch fella
p.s. Does the german collector (of very high esteem) still want to purchase your old re-dial (steel variant) for the price he quoted, now that the dials been removed?

Catherine,
re: your opinion..OK, understood. And yes thanks, I will enjoy the watch, it's on my wrist as I write this.
Regarding the older and very esteemed German collector... I'm glad you asked...he did buy the dial. But not because he believed it to be original. When he offered to buy it from me his choice of words was somewhat confusing : "I know several collectors who would be interested in it", "don't re-finish it" , "the 'Swiss Made' on the bottom has been done before". Initially, I took this to mean he felt it was an original. I was wrong, he did NOT believe it was original. He is/was very interested in the Indices and told me they were rare. It's not the first time I have misunderstood him and probably not the last. So when I said he told me "indeed it was original", I completely misread him.
In fact he thinks that it is possible that that dial began it's life on a 1952-1954 automatic that was later repainted to be an Ingenieur.

Todd, what a fantastic result!
Those Wizards of Schaffhausen have done it again - and inside that beauty they have serviced and oiled and put back into service probably one of the best ever mass produced automatic movements ever to come out of Switzerland. The legendary Cal.85x
You have a great watch there, which is very wearable with classic lines.

I remember with my own 766AD considering for some time whether or not to restore the dial or leave it as is. Eventually I decided to have it repainted by a well known dial restorer in Germany. You can see the contrast between old and new above. At first I wasn't sure I had done the right thing, as there are various schools of thought on this subject , restore or leave it alone, but in the end I'm glad I had it done.
I see you have received the old dial so if you would like the name of the company who did my restoration just drop me an email and I will be happy to give you the details. I think your watch looks great and what an excellent job was done by IWC.
cheers
Todd
