I don't own a 3227 or the CFI. But for those who do what would you do to improve it? Add crown guards? Make it smaller? My point is this... Is the new 40mm Ingenieur an upgraded 3227? What do you think?

I am sure it will be lower priced than the 3227. Other than that the Antimagnetic protection has been decreased (due to the dial I suspect) and no 80110 cal. I think it is a simplified 3227 Alan and I see no wrong in this since we haven't seen the whole family yet for one thing.

I own the titanium 3227, so the comment I have will be even more true for the steel version. Although the 3227 is only 42 mm, it is quite high, and it wears bulky, a bit uncomfortable. My guess is that with the new 40x10 mm watch that problem disappears. As it has an antimagnetic cage it still is a real Ingenieur. That the 30110 movement is used can be seen as a hommage to that movement: being so sturdy and accurate, that is fully deserved. The crown guards are useful if you see the watch as a tool watch: a female colleague of mine got the crown of her watch ripped off when it got stuck behind a door post (don't ask me how she managed to do that). All in all, you can build a case that the new 40 mm Inge is an improvement over the 3227. Being a better seller than the 3227 may not be that difficult.

The new one is definitely an upgrade, because it completes the "Junior Line".
Ref. 3227 was meant to compete with Rolex sport watches, this new one simply wants to open the door of luxury watches to new, young, wealthy, watch-fans - imho.
Btw, this one beats any Rolex any time:

Let's call it a different way, what really matters is IWC completed this entry-level offer, now available in each collection. I think this is a strategic accomplishment.
Venturing to sound paradoxical, I believe the most interesting things IWC is doing throughout these years is about strategy.
I would read with great pleasure a book about these years at IWC.

That is an interesting observation, I agree with you. Drawing a grid, dividing each family into subcategories of corresponding types. Makes you wonder how the entry level for the Da Vinci will look like, probably in a bit more than one year from now.
