Hi all,
I've been reading your forum for a while now and I'm getting ready to make a purchase of some description. I'm getting money for my 21st in January and looking to get an iwc. I've narrowed it down to 2. The portofino 356303 or pilot chronograph 371701. I know they are both a different style of watch and can afford either so just looking at any pros and cons or things to be aware of that I wouldn't of already read. Also is the pilot dressy enough to wear with a suit?

Hi James,
Personally I would go for the Pilot, no doubt. I think the pilot line provides a lot more of both tradition and design edge. Will definitely work fine with a suit as well.

What a great decision you have to make, either way you are getting a fine watch. The pilot is certainly dressy enough for a suit and IMHO the better of two great choices. That said, go with the one that makes you smile, and try not to spend all day looking at your wrist. LOL
Let us know which you decide on and post some pictures.

To answer your question, yes, I think the Pilot is very well suited to be worn with a suit, especially when weighing in your age I think the watch would strike the right balance between classy and sporty. Actually, I myself wear a suit to work every day and am currently in doubt whether the 3717 or 3777 will become my first IWC. I think KRISTOFFER_J makes an excellent point about how a change of strap can change the look of the watch to fit the occasion.
To try and help you I will just name a few dimensions which could be used to compare the watches. You probably already considered those but I thought I'd just give it a try:
Very clean and calm dial versus the more "busy" pilots dial
Roman versus arabic numerals
A light vs a dark dial
chrono vs just time and date
both have ETA based movements
39mm vs 42mm diameter
9.5mm thickness vs 15mm
no lume vs lume
etc
In the end I think it is essential to "touch and feel" both pieces and then a little voice deep inside will speak to you.
Please let us know what you decided and you know what they say, A picture says more than a thousand words...:)

Thanks for all the help guys it's much appreciated.
Looks like everyone's on the pilot side of the fence, before this I was all for the portofino but after chatting to the parents and you lot it seems to me that I'd wear the pilot more than the portofino and it will be more versatile with the straps. Plus I guess that leaves room to add the portofino at a later date, mums words :p

Hi James,
This must be an exciting time for you, with the anticipation of a new watch and your 21st birthday!
If I was 21 again and looking at either of these 2 watches, I would consider the Pilot to be most suitable for my age and lifestyle. It is very versatile and can be worn for most occasions, and I would find the Portofino to be more restrictive.
Just my 2 cents because you asked!!!!
At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong answer, so get the one you LOVE!!!!

As for the pilot's watch being matched with types of attire, I think it would look great with a suit and great with casual wear.
Enjoy whichever watch you decide on.

Todd

Welcome to the forum
Listen with your heart and go with the one that speaks to you but know this - whichever you choose it won't be your last!
Regards
Peter
I would without a doubt take the pilot. It can be dressed up or down depending on the bracelet/strap you put it on.
Whatever you choose you won't regret it!
