And then I see that and my mind wanders again, hopefully going to get down to Glasgow to try on both and then can try to make a decision.
Do people struggle to get different watch straps for the pilot due to the lug width?
James
The lug width for the pilot Chrono is 21mm. This is pretty standard. IWC will have a few options of different straps you can order. There are also 3rd party straps giving you perhaps too many options.
With regards to your mind wandering, I have the Portofino Automatic 3565. It is slightly different from the one you are looking at. I choose it because i was attracted to it, it is slim and can easily fit under a shirt cuff, and it goes well with suits or casual weekend attire.
Below is a pic.
You've probably seen this one before, but if not then maybe it will confuse you even further.

Thanks for the help guys it's really helping, I looked at the latest model and the reason I'm not going for it is I'd want the chronograph on Milanese and I can't afford it. Whereas the older portofino looks less suited to a chronograph.
I think I'm really getting the love for the pilot. It was when I tried on a mark xvii that made me think. I never liked them but it looked really nice on wrist.
Don't suppose there's anyone in Glasgow, Scotland with a pilot and or a portofino that fancies a coffee and allow me to have a nosey at their watch.

I am sorry that I can't help you with this one but I like your approach! There are quite a few members from the UK so maybe your request isn't that far-sought after all!
I have 2 Pilot's watches in my collection but the Portofino line certainly merits some attention. Personally I really like the Portofino 8-day hand- wound!
The most important advise though is that you try them both and decide with your heart.

a very pleasant problem you have indeed. Ultimately 'the watch will choose you' :) and the other left at the dealers, well --- given it is IWC, there will always be a next time !

Hello James:
When someone is contemplating a 3717-01, I'm always ready to throw in my opinion since I am a huge fan of this recently retired model. Just to verify, you are refering to last years model and not the current 3777. If so and you have an opportunity to acquire the 3717...you get my vote over the Portofino.
As many have already commented, this Pilot Chrono is so classic/iconic that it will fit just about any occasion due to it's ability to be dressed up or down. The only situation I would stay away from wearing it would be if water activity is involved. IWC offers a number of straps that can create the casual or formal look you desire. My personal suggestion would be to consider the "Top Gun" soft strap and/or the St. Exupery Buffalo Brown for casual times. For those dressier events, a black croc ( which also works well as casual ) is a given and the stunning Pilot bracelet would be a teriffic option as well.
A final suggestion..should you decide on the 3717 and it's available on bracelet, go for it ! It will be less costly than ordering one at a later date. It is also the perfect moment to negotiate a strap/s as part of closing the deal.
Anxious to hear the outcome. Please let us know the results.
