It is great to have such kind of problems. Both are great timepieces. If I understand correctly you don't intend to make your choice based on the movement or other technical aspects, but rather on the style. I don't know your overall style, but at 21 years of age, I pretty much believe that the pilot would fit your style much better.

Yeah I prefer the 3717 to the 3777 I'm not keen on the date windo or the placement of the iwc logo. Yeah I think I've managed to secure a mint preowned 3717 with all boxes and paperwork on black croc. But need to try both on before I decide.
I like the idea more and more of having versatility with straps and feel the pilot is more welcoming to different styles and colours or straps. I've been bad already I've had a chat with rich from toshi to see if we can sort something for a pilot. Still, will have I wait and see what the trying on feels like.

Small update in the proceedings, after spending a morning watch hunting and checking out different brands and styles I eventually came back to iwc, unsurprisingly and in my head I had pilot and in my heart I had portofino and after trying on both I almost immediately discounted the pilot as my heart screamed for the portofino. It just felt more elegant on my wrist and more special. Although I still love the pilot I feel that for a 21st the portofino will be more of an occasion watch and one which will grow with me. So it looks like the portofino won my heart over and will be getting purchased in the next couple of weeks :).
With a pilot shortly after once I save some more money up.

I am sorry that I can't help you with this one but I like your approach! There are quite a few members from the UK so maybe your request isn't that far-sought after all!
I have 2 Pilot's watches in my collection but the Portofino line certainly merits some attention. Personally I really like the Portofino 8-day hand- wound!
The most important advise though is that you try them both and decide with your heart.
Kind regards,
Clemens
+1 on the Portofino hand wound. I hear it calling.....loudly

It was a long morning but it arrived, I'm over the moon. No photos just yet as it was taken away and I'm not allowed it till my birthday :(.
I ended up buying a pre owned portofino 356303, with box and all papers. Only thing missing was the cleaning cloth but I think I have one coming from laings in glasgow if not ill source one.
I. The end I felt the portofino would grow with me as a keeper watch and I fell in love with the champagne face and gold batons over the new model with the silver face and red highlight.
Over all I'm delighted and can't wait till next Friday till I can open it and start wearing :)
