It had been fourteen years since my wife, Dorothy, had been to her home country of Kenya. It would be my first trip and an interesting homecoming for her.
First, we needed good hand luggage for the 16 1/2 hour plane ride. An IWC Yacht Bag (courtesy of a MF contest win) and a Top Gun flight bag (courtesy of Hoa Huyhn at the IWC Beverly Hills Boutique) were the perfect travel companions. We arrived in Nairobi after surviving the "old terminal" at Heathrow late in the evening.
Nairobi experienced significant growth (and crazy heavy traffic) in the years since Ms. D's departure. Still, the city was vibrant and with interesting sights to see. We also had the opportunity for a short safari in the Narobi National Park to observe the wildlife. We visited the Giraffe Center!! We took the short flight from Nairobi to the old port of Mombasa for a few days on the Indian Ocean.
The city tour included a visit to Fort Jesus (built by Portuguese) and to 'old city' with distinctive Arabic architecture. Tusk portals built by the Royal Navy as a tribute to the Queen (who was on holiday in Kenya when she learned of her succession). We returned to Nairobi to finish out our time visiting with Dorothy's cousins and friends.
It's become a cliche...but my trusty travel companion was my Spitfire Mark XVI. With its anitmagnetic cage, perfect bracelet (for humid Mombasa days) and unobtrusive good looks, it was the obvious choice for multiple airport screenings and the varied climates encountered on our trip.
The best part of my journey to Kenya was....Kenyans! I found them to be excited about the future of their country and moving forward to implement their new constitution! The worst part of the trip (aside from Nairobi traffic) was my inability to 'check in' with this forum...and I missed all of you!
Best regards, Jim

Jim, we missed you as well, but it looks like you had a great time. Kenya is a country that is on my bucket list and at my age I need to get moving on scheduling my trip. LOL. Thanks for posting the interesting pictures and your watch choice was perfect given the weather, I think I'll take my 3727.
Hope you and Dorothy have a great New Year celebration and a Healthy and Happy 2013. Maybe I can see both of you in the coming year, you need a trip to the NYC Boutique.

It looks like you had a wonderful and nostalgic trip to Kenya. The pictures are wonderful. I trust it won't be 14 years before your return. Like Kevin, my bucket list includes a visit to Africa...a photographic safari.

Great report. I love how the sequencing of the photos makes it seem that the plains of Africa are in side the Nairobi National Museum. Made me do a double-take. Happy New Year.
