Hello IWC forum members!
I'm new here but have been browsing the forum for the past few days! I have always loved watches and have finally decided to take the plunge and purchase my first "proper" watch.
I want a watch that is destined to be classic, can be used everyday, looks equally good in a T and shorts as it does in a suit, and is made of steel. After a lot of research I find myself going round in circles, yet always coming back to the Ingenieur 3227-01.
Despite not having seen it in the flesh, there is something I absolutely love about the design and craft of the watch. The purchase will be a reward to myself for finishing my Masters degree, and at 24 years of age will be the most significant purchase I have made aside from my car!
This is where I turn to the experience of the forum for guidance. I have checked several watch sales forums frequently looking for a mint condition example that is for sale in the EU, narrowly missing out on a couple :( I have some idea of how much I should be paying... (but not a great idea) Should I definitely try on and see the watch before buying? This is proving to be most difficult considering that not one AD I have contacted has one. I have even tried on several similar models such as the Planet Earth to get an idea of how it might look/feel.
I would appreciate any help with regards to acquiring what will, in all likelihood, prove to be the start of a great and tremendously expensive hobby! I would also appreciate any advice from members who own the watch and their recommendation on the watch as my first IWC.

You probably are aware of the fact that the 3227 is not produced anymore for some years, and that AD's in all probability will not have a new 3227 for sale. That is, you will always get a pre-owned watch. Getting such a pre-owned watch always is a bit risky, the best advice I read (I never bought pre-owned watches) is to make sure you can trust the buyer absolutely. Seeing the watch before buying is often not possible, for instance if you sit in London and the watch is located in Sydney.
If you really and only want to buy a 3227 this is the best I can do. If you love the Ingenieur line, you can also try to buy a new one. The Mission Earth will be disappear soon from the AD's as it will be discontinued. Or, you wait a week to see which new Ingenieurs are presented and pick one of those. Good luck!
Kind regards, Paul
