Good evening all,
I would like to introduce myself to this fantastic world of IWC timepieces .. Name is Nishant and I am an oncologist in training with a passion for eradicating cancer and a love for timepieces. I have learnt a lot browsing through the pages of this vastly informative and very well-moderated forum. I am very close to acquiring my first IWC, A Big Pilot Muhammad Ali, that I have lusted for quite a while and wish to clarify a point regarding its movement before I move forward.
Have the changes in the movement and crown stem that were brought to 500901 (in comparison with from 500401) been incorporated in the BP Ali despite its 5004 reference ?
I understand the Ali still has the same clasp as the 500401.
I have received conflicting replies from the boutiques and the concierge and wish to be perfectly clear before moving ahead with the purchase.
Looking forward to your reply,
Thanks
nishant

Nishant,
Sorry, don't personally know the answer to this but am sure some of our venerable forummers (some of whom recently had this bold watch on their wrists in geneva and who are enroute back home) will be able to tell you.
Either way... looking forward to you closing the deal and posting photos!

Welcome Nishant, The 51111 movement is identical in both models,as is the stem. The crown has a different reference for the 5009 but I can't see any difference between them. Leo

Thank you for your replies, Thang and Leo.
Please correct me if I am wrong but I read on the forum that the 5009 has an updated crown/sealing tube design to decrease the torque and hence the likelihood of stripping the threads.
Does the Ali have this new crown/seal tube design ?

Dear Nishant. My advice to you is go straight to the horses mouth.I"ve dealt with Schaffausen direct, and found them to be very accommodating. you can find the phone number for IWC Schaffhausen on Google. Kenneth.

The crown/tube combination on the 5004 IS an update, from the 5002 and pretty much eliminates the possibility of heavy-handed owners cross-threading the crown when locking. The Ali has this crown/tube combination. The 5009 crown has a different reference but I can't see any difference between them and have never seen any official communication referring to the 5009 version as an 'update'. Leo

On a related note, I've very recently sent in both my BP 5002 and BP 5004 for complete service and I was wondering if IWC was going to upgrade at least the BP 5004 to the new improved winding mechanism which is on the BP 5009 (assuming that an upgrade is even possible). If the upgrade is possible on the BP 5004 would the upgrade also be done on the BP 5002 (losing the fish crown of course)?

Tracy, that would be a "Frankenstein" watch *LOL*. If they would switch the whole calibre, then it could be at least for the 5004. But in this case, the costs probably justify to buy a new 5009. On the other side, would you like to upgrade from your 5003 also? *LOL*
