A quick internet search seems to indicate that IWC Bergland is associated with replica, i.e. fake watches. I am inclined to think that this cal 983 is a fake.

Ah, sounds interesting. Du you have further details to confirm it ?
BTW, I am not sure that those BERGLAND replicas, offered via internet, have anything in common with this OLD brand !

Maybe ONLY the name is identical ?!
But I have no verification about those name yet.
You may have a valid point. Check this Bergland PW with cal 983 sold at Bonhams http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/20046/lot/4627/

Ébauche - an incomplete 982, je te remercie, Heiko :-)
Hajo
Fair Winds and Following Seas
Thanks for the very interesting link.
I have attached photos of the stamp from both covers.
That would be a mighty coincidence that the watch I bought has exactly the same case number as the watch your link shows :-)
But I think that this "9." has a different meaning than a case number !
Wonderful find!
Best regards
Mark

Thank you very much Greg.
Indeed a very useful information.
Greetings
Heiko
The watches are very similar indeed but, as you also know, not the same; the perlage is different.
I also wonder what the 9. means.
